FN Five Seven - Worth the price
I've been thinking about one for my next purchase. I'm told they are ridiculous accurate. I found one at a local gun shop for $1300.00. (Ouch) Are they really worth it ?

I have one I bought on the used market for a good price. It's a very high quality pistol with some unique and useful qualities. I wouldn't pay $1300 for one but at a decent price the 5.7 is a worthwhile pistol to own. Good gun, but I'd wait for a better deal.

I could find better guns for 1,300 then the five seven.

I've been watching the availability of 5.7 ammo for the last half year, and unless I buy on the Internet, I cannot get any more than the 5 boxes I got in late December. Here's what I can find right now, and for me, it's too expensive to shoot (as much as I'd like to shoot one).
American Eagle 5.7x28mm 40 Gr. FMJ 50rds (AE5728A) 41 mins ago $0.80/rd [$39.99] [in stock] [LAX Ammo] FNH-USA 5.7 x 28 mm SS197SR 40 Grain V-Max - a - 50 Rounds per Box 8 hours ago $0.80/rd [$39.97] [in stock] [Ammunition Depot] 500 Rounds Federal Fiocchi 5.7x28 40gr TMJ - Made in USA, AE5728A $0.75/rd [$375.00] [in stock] [Eagle Eye Guns] 5.7x28mm FNH SS197 V-Max 40 Grain 50 Round Box 2034 fps Blue Polymer Tipped Projectile $1.02/rd [$51.19] [in stock] [CheaperThanDirt] FN 5.7 40 Grain Sporting Round (200 Rounds) $0.95/rd [$189.95] [in stock] [US Armorment] 5.7x28mm 27 Grain JHP Lead Free FNH SS195LF - 50 Rounds $1.80/rd [$89.99] [in stock] [Surplus Ammo] Federal AE 5.7X28mm 40gr FMJ 50 rounds $0.98/rd [$48.99] [in stock] [Goose Island] For example, I got my CZ75 earlier this year, and I've shot it thousands of times to date. Lately ball ammo has become available in the low twenty cent per round range. I believe that the lowest price that I've heard of for 5.7 the last six months is $0.44/round, but that's what I've heard - I haven't seen it. I have seen upper fifty cent range, but it was gone before I could have obtained any. Basically, available ammo for the 5.7 is roughly three times as expensive as 9mm, and for me that is too much. I want a PS90, but until ammo is more available I am choosing to not buy one. I would most likely buy a five-seven pistol too. I am a fan of he caliber. I will eithe wait until the pistol nd rifles prices return to more normal prices and ammo is abundant. I just do not want o end up with $2500 worth of firearms nd no ammo, or risk paying 2 or 3 times more for 5.7 ammo than I do calibers I already own.

IMO it's not worth it, but I personally also don't see the point of the round without the AP capabilities it was designed for. Not that I'm out shooting long pig or anything but just kind of made it seem like a really expensive 22mag plinker...

Saw one in a store recently. Weird looking shells.

banger, you'll have to decide if it's worth it. During the frenzy,I believe some sold for a lot more. A comment or two on the gun itself. I had the use of one for several months, received NIB, for T&E purposes. I guess it is odd looking to many of us, but is an accurate, reliable, quality pistol. We didn't want to wait the approx. 90 days it would have taken for me to get the duty/AP ammo from a bonded Customs warehouse, so we did our testing with the available SS192 hollow point ammo. I chronographed the SS192 ammo through the pistol and it averaged 2025fps. The pistol has very little recoil and all who shot the pistol liked it. The pistol was still like new, and I could have bought it for a very reasonable price when we were done, and now wish I had...ymmv

FN is losing a lot of money by not doing two things (in this order). 1) Chambering the PS90 in 9mm, and 2) Chambering the 5.7 in 22mag.
I am convinced that a majority of the people buying the 5.7 are doing so because its in Call of Duty. I would never do something like that. I want a P90 because it was in Stargate SG-1 |

Ugh, that is the most objectionably uglyass handgun I think I've ever seen. A Hi-Point feels downright handsome and cocky in the FN's presence.

IMHO, $1300 for a large, awkward looking, polymer pistol is a helluva lot of money.
A couple things to think about: Would anyone pay that much for that same pistol in a more mundane caliber? If not, is the novelty (or added capability) of the caliber enough to offset the significant additional cost? Now, add in the fun factor of the boutique ammo. Even before the big scare, that ammo wasn't exactly growing on trees.

Well, any LEO can (at least in the very near past if not now) get a much lower price from https://shop.ombguns.com. Believe me, if I could afford one, I'd get it as my wife really wanted one too. We'd be using it for target practice 99.999% of the time. As for availability, Eagle Eye Guns has 500 rounds for $375.00 and they allowed me to place five (2,500 rounds) in my cart. No, I did not check out, but usually if there is a limit it is started up front or only the allotted amount will go into the buyer's cart. Also, Ammo Depot has a limit of five fifty round boxes at $0.80/round. Using gunbot.net, I can find 5.7 ammo daily. It's just that prices are expensive.

Couldn't help it
Guys
Thanks for all the replies. Allow me to give an update. I went to another LGS and they had one listed for $1200 and he knocked $50 off to $1150. I guess his Jedi Mind Trick skills were just too strong for me. I walked out with it. Now it's time to play "let's find some ammo" game |

I wish you luck on the ammo search.
It's one of the most fun pistols you'll ever shoot. I don't discount it as an SD pistol either. There is something to be said for almost no recoil, easy to concele and 20 round magizines. It's almost as fun as it's big brother, the PS90.

Just something to keep in mind. They are banned in some indoor ranges for shooting clear through the shredded tire backstops and damaging the walls behind them.
Both of the two indoor ranges I shoot at in NC are rated for 458 Win Mag and there are no 5.7x28s allowed at either of them no matter what brand or ammo or even with reloads. We even shoot suppressed sub machine guns at both these indoor ranges but no 5.7s are allowed. I know this "penetration" is something the 5.7 was designed for but If you can't shoot one because of bans, availability of ammo, or cost of ammo, what's the fun of having it. Especially at that price. Good luck with yours, I hope you love it, it does sound like fun but to impractical for me. |

I've never heard of the round banned indoors due to penetration, but I have heard backsplash as an excuse. Have fun with your new FN. It's a great pistol. |

I love the idea and weight of the gun but I went another way with a PMR30.
