A while back I (with friend's help) loade dup some 9x19 for his MP40 submachine gun. We used slow powder to maximize velocity from a relatively long barrel. That got me thinking: just as we pick fast powders trying to get the best round for 2" snubbies, shouldn't we pick slower powders for 16 and 18 inch carbine barrels? Velocity tests generally show little muzzle velocity increase for 45acp, .40 and 9x19 when they are fired from carbines. Do any manyfacturers offer factory loads that would provide increased velocities from long guns?

cornered rat... I have tested the 9X19 cartridge fairly comprehensively in my pressure gun (16.5" barrel). The problem involves case capacity, unusually quick pressure rise times, and powder density. Sierra also discusses this in the carbine load section of the current manuals. Even with access to an excellent selection of non canister propellants, it is very difficult to improve on CorBon's commercial (+P) loads. Bob

I get an extra 400FPS from a 44 Rem. mag out of a 16 " carbine as compared with a 6" barrelled pistol, but it is with the same ammo and 180gn projectiles.
Arn't we getting a bit away from the purpose of interchangability and also the raison d'etre for carbines as a handy adjunct? Most reloading manuals give pistol and rifle data for 44mag-38Spl-45Auto etc and there could be some scope for re-loaders there perhaps. Have fun, sounds like a good project. ------------------ ***Big Bunny*** |

Revlover cartridges have volume which isn't available with most pistol cartridges. A reloader can take advantage of this by going to a powder in the range of IMR 4227 thru IMR 3031. Bob
