7.62x39 conversion for a G3

Years ago I remember reading in the old Machinegun News where Bill Fleming was converting HK G3's to 7.62x39 feeding from an AK magazine. Is anyone out there doing this conversion?

I may be wrong, but I don't think Flemming ever did an HK52 type conversion. As I understand it, he developed the HK51 conversion of a G3, but never messed with the 52 in 7.62x39. HK made a few prototypes but they never went into production. Toad Bailey of special weapons notoriety made an HK52 type, but only made a few and, from what little I've heard, they didn't work all that well.

Honestly, if you're in the market for a 7.62x39 MG I'd be watching C-products for the release of their 7.62x39 mags for the AR15/M16, rather than considering a poorly cobbled together HK52 clone that will be next to impossible to find spare parts for.

I was looking for a way to save on ammo costs, 7.62 nato is expensive. I have every copy of the Machinegun News printed I will search and find the issue that had that artical. It was just a thought on how to save on ammo costs. I purchased the G3 14 years ago so Vollmers could convet it to a 21 but they told me parts were no longer avaible. Oh well it was just a thought.

I stand corrected:

Apparently Flemming did do a 52 type.

It sounds like you have a registered receiver, but if I'm mistaken and you've got a sear gun, I'd get either a 5.56 or 9mm host gun to use for cheaper shooting than 308. If you've got a registered receiver, however, I wouldn't mess with trying to have it hacked up into something like a 52. Now I'm no gunsmith, but as I understand it, the conversion involves some serious work cutting and reforming part of the receiver around the mag well to accomodate the smaller AK mag. Just my $.02, but you've got a great gun, so why risk converting it to someting that may or may not be reliable and may give you problems finging spare parts?

doubt someone will see this but.....

this is just a thought on an idea i had. iv seen these chamber adapters for 308 and 30-06, you put the adapter on a spent 7.62x39mm casing, apply the included locktight, insert it into the chamber and keep the bolt closed for no less than 12 hours. after its set, you can open the bolt and it will eject the 7.62x39mm casing, and feed the rounds just fine. this is what red jacket firearms did to turn jessy jame's BAR from 30-06 to 308. i had the idea of doing this on a G3. the standard magazines work just fine, and g3 mags are cheap. this would give you a nice set up thats easy on the wallet, with concerns to ammo and magazines. the adapter its self is like 25$

The trouble with those caliber inserts is that they come out.
