.221 fireball COL = 1.830?
The Hodgon load data site and my Speer reloading manual specify 1.830" as the COL for .221 Remington Fireball. My Redding seating die for this caliber runs out of room before it will seat the 40 gr Hornady V-Max bullet to this depth. The deepest that I can seat this bullet leaves me with a COL of 1.870". This seems to chamber in my rifle alright (CZ 527 American) but I'm just wondering if anyone else is able to seat their bullets to 1.830 using standard dies in this caliber.
Thanks, Kim |

There are really only three things that determine what COl to use in YOUR rifle. Distance to the lands, Mag length, and have at least one (1) bullet diameter seated into the case. Other than that, seat them were ever you what, usually seated for best accuracy.
From Accurate Powder. SPECIAL NOTE ON CARTRIDGE OVERALL LENGTH “COL” It is important to note that the SAAMI “COL” values are for the firearms and ammunition manufacturers industry and must be seen as a guideline only. The individual reloader is free to adjust this dimension to suit their particular firearm-component-weapon combination. This parameter is determined by various dimensions such as 1) magazine length (space), 2) freebore-lead dimensions of the barrel, 3) ogive or profile of the projectile and 4) position of cannelure or crimp groove. |

I seat my 40gr V-Max to 1.890 in my CZ 527 American. I use 2400 and it shoots like this at 100 yards with a 12 year old boy behind the trigger.

Thanks for the info, Steve. If I can get my rifle to shoot that well I'll be one happy camper! I might have to hire a twelve year old to shoot it though, since I've never shot groups that good in any of my rifles.
