.308, M1A/M14 and 180gr bullets

I've heard that 180gr is the ceiling for safe use of an M1A without disabling the gas system and turning it into a manual bolt action rifle.

Anyone here shoot 180gr bullets in their FAL/M1A/M14/BAR chambered in .308?

I'm hoping to get drawn for elk this year, and my M1A in .308 is looking to be the best suited gun to the task, as long as I can shoot 180gr bullets in it. If not, then I work back down to my 30-30.

Any recommended powders for 180gr and a gas system?

Azred, I'd call Springfield Armory on that one.

I've decided I will cap myself at 168gr for match bullets and 165gr for hunting bullets. 15gr isn't going to matter that much, I don't think. If it does, then I really should just get something with more "oomph" if .308 isn't enough to do the job.
