It would not be caliber specific, but rather determined by the powder you are wanting to use the primer with. As a very general statement, they could be used in any pistol caliber of less than S&W40 if the powder calls for a magnum primer. In hard times, they could be substituted for regular SP primers with a cautious workup of the load.

I would say the most common usage of a small magnum pistol primer is a .357mag load charged with H110 or W296.

My favorite load for the .357 using 2400 (around 15 grains) I always use the magnum primers, as 2400 is a slow burning powder, and the amount is also important.

I have used the Remington Magnum Primers in place of regular primers with .38 special loads. I have not noticed any difference in accuracy or recoil, nor have I noticed any high pressure signs. Primarily used in a Speed Six, not sure I would try it at a max load in a j-frame.
