I need advice. I am gonna buy an 18.5" barrel for my 870. the question is how long of a mag tube should I look for? I don't want the mag tube to protrude further than the barrel. thanks every one

With an 18 inch barrel the +2 extension usually comes right to the end of the barrel. That would give you 7+1 capacity.

thanks. now 7+1 is that with 2 3/4 inch rounds? and do they make 18.5" barrels that chamber 3 1/2" rounds too. I want to use 2 3/4" rounds for self defense and 3 1/2" for bear defense

A two shot extension is a hair longer than an 18.5" 870 barrel. Not enough over to worry about.

And that will give you 6+1. not 7+1.

Re 3.5" loads for bear protection, the right 2 3/4" load will be more than enough for that purpose when inserted correctly.

In a half century of hunting, action and target shooting, I've yet to need a 3.5" load.

If you ever need to fire a 3.5, be sure to brace your back against a stout tree...
Just kiddin' that is not advisable, as in it isn't advisable to put yer hand on a hot stovetop...

3.5" seem to have a rep for being arm breakers. I think there a blast to shoot.(no pun intended).
