Get another AR15 or just get a different upper?

So as much as I was excited/into/intrigued by the M1A and the mighty 308 round, in a moment of self reflection, I realized it's an absolute want and not a need.

So then my thought goes to getting another AR15. I like the 223/556 round but I am interested by the 6.8 SPC and.458 SOCOM and other rounds.

What would be the advantage of getting another AR15 vs just buying another upper?

Also, on a separate note, how much different is the M&P Sport to a "milspec" AR15? (I know about the barrel/dust cover/forward assist, but how about the internals?)

Open to general speculation or specific suggestions.

Thanks!

If you hunt then a 6.8 upper would be a good thing to get. The round is good out to 300 yards for hunting. If youdo go with a 6.8 upper you will need 6.8 mags since trying to put 6.8 rounds in a .223 mag doesn't work very well if at all.

I would advise you to go with ARP or Bison since they are the two of the best as far as the 6.8 is concerned.

That would be the reason for me to get another upper. One in 6.8 would be more appropriate for hunting. Buy I like the M&P Sport for the price.

Get another upper, then when you get tired of swapping uppers, get another lower to go with it. When the AR-15 is just not enough anymore, go AR-10.

The S&W Sport is an excellent rifle, I do own one and can say from experience it is reliable and very accurate. It does not have a FA or dust cover so if you fel you need them then look at a different rifle. The Sport has 5R rifling with a 1 in 8 twist and it melonite treated. Mine shoots under 1 inch all day long at 100 yds with American Eagle ammo and my hand loads. Many groups are 1/2 to 3/4 size.

Get the Colt 901 or whatever their new baby is. I believe it's .308 with conversions coming down the pipe for other calibers.

most folks say they will just swap uppers but in the end most spend the bucks and get a new lower too

I can't see how it would be a issue to swap out uppers? Time wise or adjustments.

Takes about 30 seconds.

Switching out uppers allows the shooter to maintain the same trigger pull and feel. If you're in a backward area where obtaining the serial numbered "firearm" is difficult or a legal hassle, having multiple uppers for one lower is a solution. Right now, I have more uppers than complete lowers but that's being remedied.

I would just get another, lowers are cheap.
