30-30 Powder?

What powder are you using for your 30-30? I've got a ton of brass, and my dad is sending me his old dies... so I figured that I would roll a few for fun. So what powder(s) have you had the best luck with. It it matters, it will be shot in a Marlin 336C.

Thanks!
Joel

I believe the IMR 3031 was developed for the 30-30. Thats what has worked for me for years. Just throwing this out for what ever its worth.

Good luck on the .30-30

IMR3031 if you want a stick powder, W748 if you want ball powder.

Lately I’ve been using Reloader 7. It works fine in both 30/30 and .375 Winchester. 150 grain bullet in the 30/30 and 255 grain in the 375. However the long time standard is IMR 3031 for the 30/30.

This is the range of powders that work in the 30-30
85. Alliant RL7
86. IMR 3031
87. Hodgdon Benchmark
88. Norma N201
89. Scot Brig 322
90. Hodgdon H322
91. Ramshot X-Terminator
92. Accurate 2230
93. Winchester 748
94. Alliant RL10X
95. Hodgdon BLC-2
96. Accurate 2460
97. Hodgdon H335
98. Ramshot TAC
99. Hodgdon H4895
100. Accurate XMR 2495
101. Alliant RL12
102. IMR 4895

Trailboss works well in the 30-30 with cast bullets. My go to powder is RL7 and W748 but Varget and 3031 work well also. My only issue with 3031 is that i can never get it consistent and i don't use it very much anymore.

I have been experimenting with 220 gr and W748.
I got the idea from a guy in Grants Pass.

Sam - where did you get this list? I'd like to see it so I can do my own research for this sort of stuff.

Thanks.

This isn't his list but it is a burn rate list commonly found on the web. http://www.hodgdon.com/burn-rate.html

Remember lists like these should be viewed as a resourse and not a comparison tool. For example never use a list like this to formulate load data.

30-30 powder

6 to 7 grams Green dot with a 160-170 grain lead bullet. Great plinking load. Why use a lot of powder and expensive jacketed bullets? If you cast your bullets, the price is less than $1 for a box of 20

!

6 to 7 GRAMS of Green Dot = 92-108 GRAINS.

Of course that would not fit in a .30-30 but it is kind of a bad idea to confuse units of measure like that.

That Explains It!

Now I can see why so many people think 30-30s are inaccurate.

I use IMR 4064, VIHT N 135, and VARGET, (just finished load development with VARGET.) When using a scope, I get sub-moa groups with IMR 4064 and VIHT N 135.

I've tried some of the powders listed here, (suggestions from the internet,) and found them to be too quick burning. Take H322, I get a 250FPS velocity spread with bullet weights from 110-170gr. When testing H322 at 300 yards, I thought my scope was broken! When I use the slower burning powders I settle for an extreme spread of less than 20fps and 3 shot groups of .5moa at 300 yards.

30-30 Powder?

Jim: You are absolutely correct. The brain was thinking "grains" but the fingers typed "grams." The following website has actually developed data for Cowboy Action Shooters. http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm The Cowboy Action Shooters have been using reduced velocity loads for all their shooting. There are also plenty of old articles by C.E. Harris and others relating to gallery loads and other universal cast bullet loads that tend to work across a variety of cartridges. The CE Harris articles could probably be found on this forum and others with a little searching - not on gdmr.com website mentioned above.
