44 cal. black powder pistol bullets

Has anyone used the 200/450 conical black powder pistol bullet? I have used the round ball and it is a 451 and you get a ring when putting it in the cylinder. I am planning to pc some of the conical bullets and wonder if they need to be sized to 450 after pc or if they need to be resized at all. If I go to resizing to 450 I will have to order a special sizing die because standard die is 451. Has anybody done this before? Thanks

Most people use .454 balls and .452 conicals. You're going to lose the powder coat when you load them.

It was pointed out to me that because conicals have wider driving bands creating a friction fit they do not need to be oversized as with a ball that has no driving band until its shaved. To my thinking I'd still prefer something like .001/2" over chamber anyway.

Have been using Eras Gone healed bullets in both ,36 and .44.

I have the Lee conical mold, had my uncle cast me some bullets last year. I don't think he sized them and they shoot well in my 1858.

Dave, do you mean "heeled" bullets, that is bullets with a smaller section at the rear that is intended to fit into a cartridge case (like a .22 LR bullet)? Heeled bullets are generally OK for cap and ball revolvers, but a hollow base without the stepped down section will usually give better results.

Eras Gone bullets have the reduced heel then lube groove/driving band that shears a lead ring. They start straight and are easy fit under the ram .

I use Lee 450/200 casted conical bullets. They don't need to be sized and they also have reduced heel to ease putting them into chamber. I have used them with my Uberti Colt Army and Dragoon revolvers.
