.41 Magnum Red dot powder loads

I am shooting a Model 657 Smith&Wesson with a 6" barrel.
Starline Brass. Remington 210 grain jsp. Federal 150 primers. Red Dot Powder
I need a velocity of 600 fps to meet ICORE minimun power factor.

There's a Red Dot load on Handloads.org for a 210 gr JSP that supposedly gives 1225fps.

I downloaded this from Alliant a couple of years ago. It is much more extensive than what they have online today.

that page shows 8.3 grains for 1200 fts.

So try about 5 grains of Red Dot and work your way down. (you're not likely to find published load data that low for .41 Magnum.) I wouldn't go below 3 grains with jacketed bullets; and even that is likely to be more than 600 fps.

I don't understand what you're trying to do. Red Dot is probably the right powder though, Clays is another good one.

If you're shooting icore.. I shoot 140 gr RNL in my 610 and 4 gr of Ramshot Competition for 975 fps ish.. and a power factor of 136.5. A little high but it gives margin for chrono error and allows me to use it in USPSA for minor Revolver. 1200 fps and a 210 is way too hot for ICORE.. If you can pick up some 170's and load to 750 ish fps you'd be good to go. This is where you'd do well to have a chrono. You are correct that the 210's only need be going 600 fps. Since it is so easy to double or even triple charge a light load of Red Dot, I'd say give Trail boss a try. It will fill the case and give you the lower velocity you are looking for. Loads from Hodgdon follow:

Sometimes the powder we want to use doesn't have any data.. If you wanted to experiment, I would do as someone else stated.. Start at 5 gr and chrono that, then back off in .5 gr increments till you stick a bullet or attain the desired velocity. Or you could try a powder made to go slow, like Trail Boss.

I have a 657 that is all but worthless to me since I don't hunt with it or have the need for something so powerful.. and my beastie has a 7.5" bbl.

Most low speed loads for the 41 mag come from lead loads and not jacketed bullets. Go to Handloads.com and click onto guests favorite loads . There are a couple but not with Red Dot . Good luck and hope a squib isnt in your future .

I got a 12lb can of red dot unopened and about 2 pounds in s 3lb can.
I cound easily find hot loads for Red dot and slow loads that can't be doudled with another highervolume powder
But what I want is a low load with 210 bullets

I am planing to strart between 5 5.55 and 6 grrains.

Red dot powder?
With either a 210 or a 220 bullet I load 5.0 grains of UNIQUE.
tHAT IS AROUND 600 FPS and is a minimum load.

You have a bunch of Red Dot. To me your plan to start around 6 gr. sounds about right with a cast bullet, but you want to use a jacketed bullet. Be very careful as you lighten the load to guard against sticking a bullet in the bore.

I'd let accuracy be my guide rather then bullet speed. Once you are below 900 fps, recoil is very light in an N frame gun.
