Single shot pistols - can they shoot conical bullets?
Am possibly thinking of getting one in .50 caliber, but would prefer not to have to use the patched round ball, as the conical Maxi-ball etc) bullets are a tad simpler to use. Anyone have any experience with these? Any particular brand recommendations?

I've used the maxi ball in my Thompson Scout 50 pistol. As I recall I have it sighted in for an 80 grain charge of RS Pyrodex. This seems like a heavy load, and it is, but it is perfectly fine in this particular gun, energy generated puts it well over most 44 mag loads and it is quite suitable for deer or many other large game animals. I would caution you against using this load in other single shots however, most muzzleloading sidearms are not as strong as the TC and using a load like this would verge on being reckless. Always follow the manufactures recommendations concerning maximum loads.
