Help with 243 Win loads

I have a friend with a 243 win who would like me to make him some ammo. The plan is to make like 4 groups of 3-5 and load the best one.

He gets free 105 gr Hdy's with lnl die deal, so probably use those.

Any favorite powder's in 243 win?

You are certainly free to do as you please. But I have 2 rules of reloading that I never violate:

- I never fire ammo loaded by anybody but me except for factory ammo
- I never reload for anyone else

I haven't had a need to use anything but IMR4064 and H4350 but I load bullets all under 100gr. I like H4350 for 70-95gr. bullets.

My 770 loves IMR4895 & ya know there`s no real answer to the question until the smoke clears & ya look thru the spotter.

Had a SS model 7 loved H-414 , that`s all I can remember with out my log book.

+1 on this. If you're going to do it, personally I'd make him sign a waiver. Friend or not, that way all liability is taken off of you.

I've used IMR 4831,4895 and 4350,also H4895(SC also) along with some Varget. The 4350 and Varget worked good (4831 #1 in one VLS) but every rifle chooses it own. 105gr in a .243 don't expect great groups,depends on the twist rate. All my rifles have shot 70 to 85gr best then would really open up with heavier bullets.

My 243 Ruger likes IMR 4350 the best and bullets in the 75 to 90 grain range so you can give it a try. I don't use the heavier bullets so can't advise you on those.

Nathan--I too have had a few friends ask me to load their ammo, over the years. And I too won't do it for them because: (1) the obvious liability problem, (2) they don't value my time; would expect to pay me for materials only, and get some cheap ammo, and (3) frankly I've got better things to do than sit in my reloading room cranking out ammo I'll never get to use. I do not happen to love reloading for its own sake.

The solution I've worked out, rather than just telling them heck no and buzz off, which isn't conducive to continuing a friendship, is to offer to teach them how to do it themselves, on my equipment, under my supervision, so they can learn how and then contemplate getting their own set of reloading equipment.

Surprising, how, if they might have to put in their own time & effort, the ones who just want cheap, no-effort ammo find some other source.

I have had two friends take me up on this, and both of them enjoy shooting the ammo they made themselves. One has gotten his own set of reloading equipment. And it was fun working with them. And both of 'em are still good friends.

One more thought: If you charge money to make ammo, you are a manufacturer. The BATFE will want you to get a manufacturers' license, otherwise you're illegal, and your home insurer will have kittens.

I usa IMR 4064 and Sierra 100g Gamekings with very nice results.

I've got a nice Win M70 carbine, worked and worked trying to come up with a load that would shoot inside 1". One day grabbed a box of Win 80gr factory loads off the shelf, shoots inside 1/2" all day. Took all the fun out of it. Goat

Got chech his barrel. Most 243s have a 1:10 twist. Too slow for the 105's or simular bullets.

I decided to do some long range target work with my wife's Model 70 243 in 1:10. Bergers 87 VLDs for hunting were the cat's meow to 1200 yards. Didn't need to try it any further.
