Original .22 short?
Does anyone know the spec's for the origonal .22 short?
For comparisons sake, I clocked my Berettia Model 21 Bobcat .22LR @ 950fps with a 40gr lead solid. I wonder how the old S&W compares to that? Has anyone chronied a Model 1 S&W? ZVP |

If you're careful you could pull a bullet, replace the smokeless power with Black Powder, I'd guess 3F but I'm not sure, replace the bullet and see what velocity you get.

IIRC, it was 1.5 gr of fff under a 29 gr externally lubed heeled lead bullet yielding about 600 fps.

A rule of thumb that I have developed from studying black powder velocities is each grain of powder generates about 15 ft-lb of energy and that fits the 29 grain bullet at 600 fps almost exactly. The 15 ft-lb per grain of black powder rule of thumb is not a hard and fast rule. Revolvers typically only deliver around 10 ft-lb per grain of powder. Large bore rifles and muskets may deliver as much as 17 ft-lb per grain of powder. |

CotW says the .22 Short was loaded with 4 grains of fine black and a 29 grain bullet.
I don't know of anybody doing any shooting with BP Shorts but there are a few experimenters in .22 Stevens Long (.22 LR) with 4.5-5 grains of FFFFg or Null and 40-45 grain bullets. They are getting up to 1100 fps from a rifle, just like standard velocity smokeless. |
