New Turkey Gun

So I'm in the market for a turkey gun. I'm looking at the benelli super nova 12 gauges. I really like them and have never heard much problems with benellis have always been under the impression that they are top of the line but I also am a FIRM believer in the idea that when a company becomes popular they start cheaping out. So that being said, all you shotgun enthusiasts shoot me some ideas. I'm not a manufacturer "hater" I really don't care I'd rather stay away from remmy 870's and mossy 500's though just don't care to hop on that banwagon I could go to about $750 and maybe $1000 but I'd like to get a good turkey setup also so if I don't have to (which I dont think I will) id like to stay under $800. Only pumps, don't see the need of a semi auto for turkey and no single shots turkey loads are bad enough. Also I'd like to stick with 12 gauge. Thanks fellas.

depends how you hunt turkeys, if you call them up close you will not need a super dupper gun or shells. any load and gun that will shoot a tight patterern at 25- 30 yards will put old tom on the table. i limite my shots to 30-35 yrds useing 1.5-2 ozs of #6,s and only shoot at the head-neck. eastbank.

I do the same thing as eastbank. I have a couple pumps but I mainly shoot semi's. My go to shotgun has been my Remington 1100 my dad gave me in 1997. I've killed lots of game and skeet with that gun. I do have a pump I use from time to time and its a bandwagon 870. Granted I've had 500's as well, they just never felt right to me. Have you considered looking at a Browning BPS? They work similar to a Ithaca. I just recently sold one because a buddy of mine wanted it more than I did. Good gun. How about a older Winchester Model 12. I have one in my collection and I've only shot it 3 or 4 times as it belonged to my great grandfather and its in 16ga. You have many options out there though.

My go to is my mossy 835. Many a gobbler have fallen victim to those 3" no.4s. All camo with the factory choke.

I would personally stay away from Benelli Super Novas. I have personally seen Super Novas fail to fire multiple times and require several trips back to Benelli to be remedied. They are very susceptible to dirt/dust/mud and this causes light strikes and failures to extract. I can highly recommend Benellis super black egale seires of shotguns though they seem to be built much better and alway work under any circumstance.

That's why I mentioned the BPS. I'm a fan of Ithaca Deerslayers even though I don't own one, yet.

Bps is also a very fine gun my father has a 410 and a 20. They handle recoil very well.

pump

Novas got purchased in my area when they first came out because the guns were considered exceptionally light. And in the words of one old gobbler hunter
"... turkey hunting IS walking" !

I cannot advise on their durability or reliability, having never owned one myself.

I do know that my (well, bamaboy's) alloy framed 835 is lighter than my comparably set up steel receiver 870. By the end of the season, I snitch the 835 whenever I can.
