Need some info on Rem 788

My father recently bought a 788 in 44 Rem Mag, and he had a few questions about it. Remington's web site is not taking questions until after the holidays. I'd like to know when 788's were made, when they were made in 44 Mag, and roughly how many were made. If you know where some extra magazines are laying about, I'd be more than happy to hear about those as well. It's a neat little gun, and should prove to be very accurate. It's also a nice strong action, so I can burn up all those 44mag loads from the good old days of liability free handloading data. Semper Fi...Ken

Can't help with specifics but the 788 was built from 1967 to 1984. The rifle came in 22" and 24" barrels with open sights and plain pistolgrip monte Carlo stock in .222, .22-250, .223, 6mm, .243, .308, .30-30, 7mm-08 and .44 Magnum. The carbine version had an 18" barrel.
Hopelfully others can chime in with some more specifics.

I bought one last summer and won't part with it.I did Know The years it was produced but cant find the info I will try to reply by the end of the week. On the accuracy of mine is down to 3/4 at 100yrds it took some time at the range but that is what its all about. The only problem is the extracter on mine is very finicy on how fast I work the action and be shure wheen you load the mag to keep the rim of the bottom cartrige behind the neht or they catch and jam.Aboutthe mags are hard to come by I payed $50 for mine.

Brownie. I could be wrong, but I believe that the Remington 788 in .44 Mag. is the scarcest version of that rifle. You might want to look into that aspect of it.
I just checked out my Gun Parts Corp. catalog, and they do not appear to have any magazines listed.

I beleave the 44 mag was produced for three years some thing like 79-81. The 44 also has a two piece bolt and a non rotating bolt head that differed from all the others.
