My Garand is coming!!!!!
Sent my order into CMP 12/1/20. In March I got email notice that they'd received the order. Today I got notice that it has shipped. Tracking says it should be here by Wednesday morning.
Kinda excited! Life is good Prof Young Last edited by Prof Young; April 27, 2021 at 11:26 PM. |

Congrats! Just make sure you only shoot mil spec/garang soecific ammo, no modern hunting or target stuff, unless you swap out the gas plug to the Schuster type

Ooops.
Yes, I meant 12/1/20. I edited the OP correcting it.
My guns is a "rack special" (I think) and was $650. I have some ammo, but won't be shooting any of it until I know it won't hurt the gun. May post some pics to get advice on that. Life is good. Prof Young |

Right meaning not over powered . . .
As I understand it the Garand is designed to shoot the M2 ball ammo. Modern loads are more powerful and you can bend the rod that works the action if you over do it with heavy bullets and high pressure. The solution is to change out the gas plug with a ported one. The lead options are the Garand Gear plug or the Schuster. Garand Gear reduces the pressure by 30% and once installed you don't need to do anything, but you still wanna stay away from really hot loads. The Schuster is adjustable so you can shoot anything and not damage the rod. I've ordered a Schuster from Midway. Looks very easy to install and adjust.

Garand is Here!!!
Garand came Fed Ex. Their shipping notice said "signature required" but the delivery guy said no signatures for "safety" reasons. (Really? A gun going to the wrong guy is less dangerous than virus on a tablet screen?) He asked my name but not for ID.
See pics below, plus one more below below. Only damage I can see is on the gas tube. I posted a pic of the ammo warning to respond to a previous query about "right ammo." Manual has full disassembly instructions. As noted previously I have a Schuster adjustable gas plug on it's way. This is gonna be fun. Life is good. Prof Young |

One more Garand pic!
One more pic below . . . as I write this it occurs to me that I've think I've seen posts with more than three pics. Is that possible only if you embed the pic in the post?

I don't know if they still do, but Schuster also made the non adjustable gas plug. I have it for my Garand. It increases the volume of the gas chamber.

I would not recommend The garand gear plug personally unless you want a safety margin with M2 ball. I would not shot any modern ammo with the garand gear plug.
The Schuster is what I recommend. It is slightly less versatile as you need to tune it to individual loads. but you can properly tune it to any load. In range TV on youtube did a great 2 part comparison with high speed video measuring the op rod velocities with each. The M1 Garand - Is Commercial Ammo Safe? Enjoy your new to you rifle. Learn the proper care and feeding of it and it will serve you well. In time you may want to consider the mentioned Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug.
Anyway for now just enjoy. Ron |

Still, the fedex practice of leaving guns on porches kind of irks me. Anyway enough off topics. Prof you are going to enjoy your Garand. I stress about improper ammo myself, but most run of the mill standard factory ammo like Remington corelokt or federal power shock will be suitable if you use bullets under 150 grains. I reload for mine, and I must say I did expect slightly better accuracy. I’ve gotten a load that holds 2-2.5 moa, so it’s not terrible. Just surprising it lags my no4mk1 enfield in accuracy is all (to be fair that enfield is neck and neck with a Swiss k31 and they shoot 1.5 moa or better, so it’s a far above average enfield accuracy).

It is determined by area under the curve system pressure, not Port Peak Pressure, which over-stresses the system. That's why the "Ported Gas Plug" functions reliably with all ammo. It just lowers peak pressure, w/o affecting system pressure very much. The GarandGear - Ported Gas Plug works as advertised. Beretta used the same thing for their modified M1 rifle, the BM 59. Thanks.
Thanks to all. All this info is seriously help full. I have some Remington 30-06 ammo that should shoot just fine with no damage. Haven't shot it yet.
Red you asked about the hang tag bore numbers. See pic below. I have no idea what those number mean so . . . help! Life is good. Prof Young |

The 0+ numbers are good if I'm reading that correctly. I think that means there is little to no wear on your barrel.
