1948-1951. I cant tell by the pics, but the book says it is either a Model 10, 11, 12, 45, or Aircrewman and their pre-model variations.

Book indicates 1994 to 1997, closer to 1994 due to your number coming rather close to the beginiing of the number range.

Just to add, it appears the barrel is stamped .38 S&W Spl. (Special). That knocks out the pre model 45 and 11. The frame is steel so that knocks out pre model 12. The SN puts it at the end of production in 1951 so that makes it a .38 Military and Police (postwar) which went on to become the model 10 when S&W started stamping model numbers ~1958.

1974 to 77 range.
The earlier 60's are ~21 oz. The 442/637's are 15 oz. The difference being a steel vs. aluminum frame.

What caliber and/or model# is it? The top breaks are a little tougher to ID.

I have a Smith and Wesson model 60 S/N 54834. The barrel only says 38 S.&W. SPL. Can anybody tell me year it was made and whether +P ammo is safe? I think I have it narrowed down to between 1965-1988 but somebody who actually knows would be appreciated. Thanks

Take the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt. It should have either an "R" prefix or a three letter prefix.

Too new. Book only covers up to 2004. But a call to S&W customer service will get you the DOB for free.

"Too new" is close enough for me .

I really thought it might be older because it doesn't have a lock.

Thanks,

Best,

Will

old .38 help

I recently inherited a .38 special snub nose revolver. There are no distinguishing marks that i can see. I have searched the internet high and low and this forum seems to have the best info. The serial for the firearm is 1235xx. if you could help identify the model and DOB for me, i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

You know what, after seeing your comment about it not having a lock, I looked up the history on the model 317 and found out that a small number were shipped in March of 1997 with the LGT prefix (which was not listed in the serial number section).
My mistake.
