S&W Model 37 J13484X
Jim,
Thank you for your feedback. It is a J prefix, both at the handle end and on the box. I am guessing it is worth about $600 in today's climate. Is that in the "Ball Game" in your expertise..... if I could ask? I am merely trying to reduce the number of weapons that he had collected. Get them into hands that would appreciate them and out of the attic. Bob |

Just got a 686-4 for a more modern / industrial mate to my K38 five screw. Serial is CBW59xx. I'm guessing about 1996? Guy says it was a Colorado jail gun? She sure is rough, but shoots GOOD!
*action isn't as nice as my five screw, however* Thanks in advance. |

66-1 SN
I've got a 66-1 with the following numbers, looking for some help identifying year of manufacture to see what I have here:
SN stamped on the butt of the pistol: "98k99--" Stamped on yoke under cylinder: "x39x8" and "A15" It was passed down to a co-worker from his dad was in LE for many years. He asked for some help identifying it. It is a 2.5" stainless combat magnum from the research I've done on this website. Thanks in advance! |

If you're referring to the other numbers referenced earlier they are assembly and inspector numbers. A 66-1 in excellent with box and papers - $600 easy. Quote:
N5xxxxx ran from 1978 to 1980. Quote:

Recovered 28-2
Jim,
I recently received a letter from the Orange Count Sheriff Department indicating that they were holding a weapon with my name attached to it. Further inquiring produced information that it was a Model 28-2 with serial number N443xx - a black 6" .357 Highway Patrolman. This was stolen about 34years ago and just popped up!! I'm pretty excited and wonder what the DOB was for this gun? I'm guessing 1975-76 as it went missing in 1978. Also, if it has been neglected, will S&W take them back and refinish/repair back to specs? Any info is greatly appreciated. Brian |

The 66-2 had been modified (trigger and sights) and the buyer paid too much for it IMO. The 65-3, not bad, but still about $100 too high. Quote:

The 36 would be nickel. If it was stainless it would be a model 60. Quote:
The others are 1991 and I assume PKN is BKN. Quote:

My grandfather has a S&W (looks identical to a model 10)...serial #404703 manufacture date and approximate value (been kept in a gun sleeve in a drawer for 40+ years?)
I don't have access to the gun, I am in AL, he is in WV...I am trying to get it into my hands (been doing so for years now)...any help would be appreciated... Some other numbers on it (where the model number usually is) 31172 (I'm guessing it would be a "part #" of some sort... Last edited by CalebJns; March 7, 2013 at 09:54 PM. |

GREAT!
Thanks a lot Jim for your kindness and for the precious help!!! When I purchased that 940 I declared the serial PKN as it seemed to me (and as stated and registered by the previous owner that sold it to me).
Since I am almost fifty I am gettin' scared my eyes could have played a nasty trick on me. The first time I'll take that 940 out of the safe I will examine it very carefully and I really hope I did no mistakes |
