These older wheelguns are turning into a kind of addiction. Can anybody tell me the mfg date of what may be an early Smith 36 or Chief's Special. SN is 222778. It has the flat latch, Inch and 7-8ths barrel, blued, wood grips have same SN engraved inside. Finish is a little rough with rust spots but locks tight and shoots very nicely. Sure appreciate any help on its age.

SN's ran from 125000 in 1957 to 295000 in 1962.

I'm thinking about buying a S&W 38. Before I do I was hoping to find out a little more about it. It has on it the following:

On the barrel on one side: Smith & Wesson
On the other side of the barrel: 38 S.&W. Special CTG.
On the frame just under the barrel in the part hidden when the cylinder is in place: Mod 10-5 and separately 15
On the base of the grip (using Xs for the last 3 digits): D850XXX
On the frame: Made in USA Marcas Registradas Smith & Wesson Springfield, Mass.

I am specifically interested in when it was made and if it can fire 38 special cartridges and the +P

I am fairly new to revolvers and would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

So I've had this 6 shot, smooth wood grip 3&3/16" barrell, fixed site(s) piece for 30 years that I got from my father. I thought I'd get some speedloaders for it and start firing it more. I have no idea what model it is. It has a loop that attaches to the butt which I believe was so the piece could be worn outside the uniform when parachuting into action. The serial# is 6844xxx. anyone know what model # It is? Thanks in advance for your help.

The dash number refers to an engineering change. In the case of the model 19 the -5 means the elimination of the counterbored cylinder and pinned barrel.

1976.
It is designed for the 38 Special and can safely fire +P.
Originally designated the .38 Military & Police, it has been in continuous production since 1899. The stainless version (model 64) began in 1970.
S&W has made literally millions of them. They are great guns.

The serial# is 6844xxx

You have one too many digits. Assuming it's 6844xx it would be around 1940.
As for the model that depends on what the exact chambering is stamped on the side of the barrel (38 S&W Special or just .38 S&W).
If it's 38 Special then it's a standard Military & Police (Model 10).
If it's 38 S&W only then it's likely a model K-200 (38/200) sold to the British.
Ammo will be a little harder to find and is not interchangable with 38 special.

I inherited a Model 10-6 .38SPCL from my Father back in 2002 and only know that he bought it from a Brockton, MA Police Officer friend of the family in the late 60's to ealy 70's. I was wondering if someone could narrow it down for me.

Also, I never plan on selling this, as my son will get it when I pass on. It has a larger wodden grip on it that covers the bottom of the frame where the S/N is located. Is this the original grip for this gun or an upgrade from S&W? And should I reblue it since I'm keeping it in the family to restore it back to its original beauty? It has lots of holster wear.

The day after I turned 21 (1987) I went and applied for a purchase permit to buy my first handgun. A week later I was the proud owner of this S&W Model 17. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the date of manufacture and approximate value( blue is about 97% just a little worn towards the end of muzzle from holster). the S# is

Smaller wood service grips would likely have been standard but I have seen quite a few "K" frames with the larger wood target grips.

I would not refinish it. That said, it would likely run about $200 plus shipping to send it off for a quality rebluing job.

Model 17's are great guns! Value is in the $500 to $600 range with them going higher in some areas.

Thanks laytonj1... That tells me he must have bought it brand new from the police officer in MA just before we moved to SC in 1973. I was 3 years old.

I am 4th generation of a S&W Fourth Edition break-over .32 revolver.
It is a rather rare model as it is nickel finished, pearl grips, and has a blue hammer, trigger, and trigger guard. This revolver was papered in 1973 by S&W as being true to manufacture and was shipped to the Massachusetts Arms Company, September 15th 1890. The revolver is in near-mint condition. The only constraint to being mint is that I do not have the box for it. I showed it to a local gun dealer and he asked me: Is it insured?

I am about to give my father's 44 to my son. I would like to know the date or year of manufacture. Smith and Wesson Model 29 S188XXX
It was purchased new for around $200, sometime in the late 50's.

I was reading comments and consultations on this forum and one reminded me that my mother traded to me a .38 spl. Model 38, Ser. no. 87XXX, a Chief's Special i believe. I am very curious about the age of this weapon. I gave it to my wife in case she needs to shoot something. Thanks

Serial number data for S&W's auto pistols is very incomplete after 1993. That said, if it's a standard 5906 (not Super 9, Military or TSW), it was produced from 1989 to 1999. Your "V" prefix SN would be at the end of production.

I'm not sure what you're asking as the letter from S&W would identify what model it is. Which, based on an 1890 manufacture date, would likely be a .32 Double Action 4th Model.

I just bought a .357 magnum and took it to a dealer to find the model number. The gentleman told me it was a 19-4 and it was ok to blue. I found the model number and looked at it closer and it looks like it says model 19-5 what is the difference between them?

Serial numbers ran from 536000 in 1946 to 712953 in 1960.

The dash 5 eliminated the pinned barrel and counterbored cylinder.
Since most collectors desire those features the dash 4 and earlier carry a premium.
