I recently inherited a .38 special from my uncle but I don't know very much about it and would really appreciate if someone could tell me the model and year of this gun.

The serial number is K 846xx

Thanks so much.

Serial # is 160089
Serial numbers ran from S150000 in 1956 to S175999 in 1957.
S&W started stamping model numbers at SN 179000 in 1957.
Yours would be a pre model 29 or simply "44 Magnum".
Your barrel length is likey 6.5", measured from the face of the cylinder to the end of the muzzle.

It's a K-38, also known as the Target Masterpiece. SN dates it to 1950. SN's ran from K84150 to K104047 that year.
It went on to become the model 14 when S&W began assigning model numbers in 1957.

SN's ran from 9K10001 to 9K99999 that year.

A model 36 is a "Chiefs Special".
Need the serial number to give you a DOB.

I have a S&W Model 60 with serial number: 954Xx.
The capital "X" is actually part of the serial #.

Could you give me a DOB on it.
Thank you...

Take the serial number from the underside of the grip butt.
There should be a "R" prefix or a three letter prefix.

Please date this Smith & Wesson Model 17-3

You people are the most helpful of any firearm site. If you will, please date a Model 17-3 I'm looking into, serial 1K90XXX. I think this falls into my C&R license. Again, my sincere thanks.

Model numbering started in 1957, so only the very oldest model-numbered S&W revolvers are going to meet the 50-year age requirement for C&R.

Jim,
I'm unsure about manufacture dates on these, any help would be appreciated.
I can't track them down in my 3rd SCSW.. mentions the serial #s split in the last half of the series.

N242XXX (28-2) (1974-1977 )
N537xxx (28-2) (1978-1980 )

Thanks!

The N2 and N5 prefixes were used mostly for the M 28's and 58's and ran for a longer time period.

The 1st SCSW is a little more confusing and shows:
1970-72 = N1 - N60000
1972-74 = N60001 - N190000
1975-77 = N190001 - N430000
1978 = N430001 - N550000
1979 = N550001 - N580000
1980 = N580001 - N700000
1980 = N700001 - N790000
1980-81 = N790001 - N820000
1981 = N820001 - N932100
1983 = N932101 - N932xxx

Jim,
thanks for that info..
Those and the 3 letter codes were the more difficult to pin down.

S&W 32 revolver

I have a related question. My wife's grandfather owned a S&W 32 revolver. I have the serial number and want to know when it was made and what the correct ammunition is. It is marked "made in Springfield Mass." the number is 681675.
