The serial # is D1761XX

Serial numbers ran from D90001 in 1969 to D330000 in 1970.

I just inherited a top-break revolver but most of the markings are worn off. It is a five shot .38 has a S/N of 4139XX

It's a .38 Double Action 4th Model.
Serial numbers ran from 322701 in 1895 to 539000 in 1909.
The chambering is .38 S&W, not to be confused with the .38 Special.

My first posting. I hope I did it right. I just picked up a k22 from a gentleman that bought it used in 1951. I believe it is from 1939. Serial number is K 52xxx. This gun has been well loved and shot. I promised them that it would be treated the same or better. I have been looking a long time for a K22 to shoot. They were always to expensive or to perfect to shoot. Clean and test fire in the morning.

My father passed and I ended up with his 357 magnum revolver.
It has a 6" barrel(according to the box). The only markings(other than maker and caliber) are on the butt. They are S1360XX.
I believe he bought it in the 1950's and I recall him calling it a"highway patrol".
Someone looked at it and said "that's a pre 27" whatever that means...
Any info would be great.
Can I shoot 38 specials in it?

k22 Serial number is K 52xxx

1948. Serial numbers ran from K18732 to K73121 that year.

S1360XX

Serial number dates it to 1955.
S&W made the "357 Magnum" which became the model 27 when they started assigning model numbers in 1958.
They also made a less expensive version, matte instead of polished blue finish. It was called the "Highway Patrolman" and will be stamped as such on the right side of the barrel. It became the model 28 begining 1958.
And yes, .38 and .38+P specials are fine for it.

I have Smith & Wesson 28-2 "Highway Patrolman" Revolver with a 6" barrel.
the Serial number is: N161XX. i just wondered if anyone had any idea when it was made and the estimated value of it.

Assuming you're referring to an original top break safety hammerless,
values as of 2006 ranged from $200 in good to $500 in excellent.

Serial number is: N161XX

1973.
Value can range from less than $400 well used to $600 in excellent.

i have a smith. it says on one side of barrell "smith and wesson" and on the other it says "38 S&W CTG". under the cylinder it says "D^D, made in USA, F3R/193". on the other side it says "VEGA SAC CA." number which i assume is the serial is on the bottom of the handle/grip and is "748XXX" plus when you open cylinder it has a number "532XX" has a few other marks like flags and trade mark ect on it. what is some info you guys may be able to scroung up on this gun??? thanks a bunch

the serial is on the bottom of the handle/grip and is "748XXX"

It's from the .38 Military & Police 4th Change series but it sounds like it might be a .38/200 British Service Revolver (model 200) but I'm not positive. The serial number dates it to around 1940. The chambering, .38 S&W, is not to be confused with the more common .38 Special. The markings are/could be proof marks and import stamps (re-imported back to the US).

My cousin recently gave me our grandfathers .44 special and was wanting to know if anybody could tell me a little about the history or what it might be worth in todays market. The serial number on the butt is 17xxx any info would be very helpful and appreciated.

It would be a .44 Hand Ejector 2nd Model. It's also known as the 44 Triple Lock.
Serial numbers ran from 15376 in 1915 to 59XXX in 1940.
They are very desirable and collectable.
Value depends heavily on condition and can range from less than $500 in "fair" to several thousand in "as new".

No dash 36's were made up to 1988. The 36-1 was the heavy 3" barrel version which was made concurrently.
The two piece boxes were made up to 1985.

I asked the seller (and someone else on the S&W Forum) and he said that the gun is a "floating J" and was manufactured in 1971. I don't know what a floating J is. Have you heard of it before?

It is marked US Army Model 1917 on the butt of the stock along with the S/N, and under the barrel is marked "United States Property". I would love to know about when this gun was manufactured. The bluing is mostly gone, and I think my Dad cleaned it with steel wool (ouch) but it is tight and still fires well! Thanks very much.

My wife and I just bought our first gun after some excellent training. She picked this one out. $410. Looking for approximate year for S&W 67-1 .38 Special AJN47XX. We shot it or the first time today at range. She was more accurate. Thanks in advance!

Production of this model began September 6, 1917 at serial number 1 (in a separate sequence from other N-frame S&Ws of the era). S&W was producing about 5,000 revolvers per month, suggesting your revolver was likely made around February of 1918.

A new building was completed in 1918 to increase production. From Sept 13, 1918 to the end of the war the U.S. government, dissatisfied with the speed of production, took control of the plant. Output increased from 5,000 to 14,500 revolvers per month. Total production during WW I was 163,476 revolvers. Some had not yet been delivered when the war ended and were sold commercially.

We have a 6" barrel that is not blued 28-2 Highway Patrolman - the difference from it and all the photos I've found online is that it appears to have been chrome plated, and where the chrome is chipping off the cylinder from wear it is steel (not blued) even when the gun is completed dismantled it is steel. It has what I call a dead man symbol on the barrel next to the 357 CTG all the photos online I see have 4 dots (one on each side of the symbol) ours is different however, also my ampersand on the S&W is very ornate not the typical & symbol. Our Serial Number is S285XXX - anyone have any clue on why my gun is different from the hundreds I've seen online? My husband has taken it apart to check it and he states it has been very well taken care of. It also has a second number under the grip stamped in the steel 73140. I think we are still going to send a letter to Mr. Jinks, just wanted to know what you guys thought?
