date a K-22
A friend asked me to check on a gun his mother has inherited. It is a K-22, 6inch barrel, original grips. I think it is post-WWII...1945 to early 50's, but I'm not sure. The serial number is K 664xx. I've read there is a book that provides this information, but as I don't have any other S&Ws to look up, I hoped someone here might share the information. Thanks very much.

Not very long ago, I was curious as to what year a revolver was made. I called Smith & Wesson's 800 number, hit option #7, a gentleman answered and I told him that I was interested in finding out what year this particular gun was made. He asked me what the serial number was, I told him. He said "let me look it up". In less than 30 seconds he said it was made in 1958.
I was planning on being sold a book or something. This is the only time I've ever called S&W and I was really impressed how helpful he was. I'm not sure if I just lucked out and got the right person or what. Nonetheless, it was very reassuring that with all the calls they probably get a day he would politely take the time to lookup the information for me. Before ending the call I told him thank you very much and he replied "no problem, call us back if you need anything else".

Thank you FlyFish
"Production date would be 1979, and it's most likely a Model 65-2. You can confirm that by swinging the cylinder out and looking at what's stamped on the frame inside the yoke cutout"
Looks as if it's a Model 13-2......that's what is stamped on the frame.....not familiar with S&W model designations.......but thanks to you i have more information |

I am new to this forum and new to hand guns in general. I am needing some help in finding out some information about a S&W Revolver
The revolver was passed to me by my father. It was given to him years ago by the wife of an ex police officer. She had it several years after his death and then passed it on to dad. I was trying to date it and find out what I could. 6 shotCould someone ID this gun and info for me or is there a website I can go to for the information ? Thanks Last edited by rjtmac; January 4, 2011 at 10:03 PM. |

I do not believe that the factory letter will give you an actual production date. It may give the exact date that the gun was shipped, but that's obviously not the same thing. |

Help? Anyone able to look up another S&W oldie?
Hi, I just inherited a S&W 38 Special CTG, serial #S826XXX.
There is an additional "S" after the SN where it is stamped under the barrel. The number ends too close to the edge of the bottom of the grip to be included there. 1906 - 1909 - 1914 patent dates. My father was a perfectionist and cherished his firearms so it's in mint condition. Inside of the barrel is like new. Also was given all of his boxes of shells. Remington KleanBore 158gr. w/steel jacket. He taped the boxes, I am guessing to keep moisture from degrading them (?). Only he knows. One box of flat head lead. How long to shells keep until they become unsafe? Thank you |

I don't know what the additional "s" might be - some earlier M&Ps that were returned to the factory to have a new (at the time) safety feature added were stamped with an "s" to indicate that the modification had been done, but your gun should have been manufactured after that new safety design became part of standard production. Ha, thanks for the info. I knew it was in great shape for a 50 year old revolver.
