S&W Model 10-5

I just found a model 10-5 yesterday. The ser# is D696XXX . Can anyone help me out to find the approximate age of it?

Also, it is my understanding that all -5 models should be okay for +P rated factory loads, is this correct?

I can't wait to pick it up. Didn't have enough cash on me, so I left it on layaway. Going to get it Saturday if they're open. I was sold once I pulled that unbelievably smooth double action trigger. SA was crisp and light too.

I'm pretty psyched about it.

Thanks in advance for any help,

DTOM

I could use a little help with a 22 revolver I just bought. The seller called it a model 17 but after doing a little digging I don't think that's accurate. It has two different numbers stamped on it. In the yoke area is 3H 70XXX on both the yoke and the frame, but on the cylinder face and on the butt is K 68XXX.

It's a 5 screw gun, with a pinned barrel and recessed chambers if that helps. The reading I have done makes me think it's a pre Model 17 K-22. When did they stop making 5 screw guns?

Uh, no. What you have is a Pre war .38 Military and Police (k frame).
The serial number is 9356xx. That looks to be an 8 in front of it but appears to have been added later. The serial number dates it to ~1940/41.

Serial numbers ran from D659902 in 1974 to D750000 in 1975.
Model number stamped steel k frames (post 1957) are ok to use with +P.

It is a K-22 Masterpiece made in 1948. They went on to become the model 17 when S&W began assigning model numbers ~1957.
The 5 screw ended ~1955 for K frames.

Jim:

Thanks so much for the quick reply...it is much appreciated.

1948 huh? Wow..that's great. I had no idea it was so old. It looks fantastic. I'm thinking I finally made a smart buy at a gun show.

Happy New Year to you!

S&W460:
You have a .38 Military & Police model of 1905 4th Change manufactured between 1940 & 1942. In original condition it's probably worth around $350-$400.
In the same serial number range S&W manufactured the .38/200 British Servive Revolver in .38 S&W caliber. After World War II a lot of these surplus guns were bored out to .38 Special and sold in the USA. Because the bored out .38 S&W chambers are a loose fit to the .38 special case its not uncommon for brass to bulge or split. A converted gun is probably worth $150 or so.

Model 36 Manufacture Date?

I'm almost embarrassed to admit it but a friend had a model 36 he did not want and offerred it to me for $100. Wanting to help him out I agreed, sight unseen. I guess I did ok. Any help on the mfr date would be appreciated. Its a 36 with no dash, serial #AVT3XXX.
Thanks!

Roy Jinks at S&W does, but it'll cost you $50 to find out.

7K1 to 7K26043 was 1974.

That's not the serial number. Take it from the underside of the frames grip butt. If it has target grips you will have to remove the them to see it.
Should have 3 letters followed by 4 numbers or a "K" in it.
