Smith and Wesson serial number search

Just received a couple of handguns from my 86 year old dad.

Wonder if I could trouble someone who's more of a "S&W guy" with approx manufacturer dates of:

.38 Mod 15-2 K689xxx

.38 Mod 10-5 C760xxx

Are these occasional +P tolerant?

I just got my hands on a cheifs special, flat latch. I was told it was from 1952 SN 184XX, and was carried by police chief from NJ as his off duty weapon. I have been searching this thread and found nothing close to that range of serial numbers.
I was also wandering why an old set of J frame grips are too long and are about 1/8" past the frame.

Serial numbers ran from 7369 to 21342 in 1952.
Your early production "Chiefs Special" uses the smaller "I" frame grip butt so you'll need "I" frame grips for it.

I have a S&W .38 five shot revolver, breakover
Model #3, as far as i can tell. Was hoping to get
some info on this weapon. I shoot it from time
to time but never ventured to explore its history.

The patent dates and SN make it a .38 Double Action Perfected Model.
Serial numbers ran from 1 in 1909 to 59400 in 1920.

It was S&W's last Top-Break model to be introduced. It was also unique in that it was the only S&W to have both the topstrap release and side thumb release on the left side and the only Top-Break to have the sideplate on the right side.

K689xxx = 1966.

C760xxx = SN's ran from C622700 in 1963 to C810532 in 1965.

Yeah, the -2's were made from 1961 to 1967.
I don't know what they are at now but last I saw it was -8's in early 2000's.

I have a smith & Wesson mod 64-1 D800XXX theres also a 97xxx S number on inside of barrel. Can you tell me what year this is made and any info. It was handed down in the family.

The Model 64 is essentially the stainless version of the venerable Model 10. It was introduced in 1970 with a tapered barrel. According to SCSW, the "-1" was a heavy barrel version introduced in 1972, with some being chambered in .357 Magnum for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol - a configuration that later became the Model 65. The 64-1 was made until 1977 when it was replaced by the 64-3 (the 64-2 was the tapered barrel version).

Serial numbers ran from D750001 in 1975 to D870000 in 1976. Interestingly, SCSW fails to note that the "D" prefix was used for the Model 64, indicating that Model 64 first carried a "1D" prefix, which is inconsistent because they also indicate the "1D" prefix wasn't used until 1976, well after the 64 was introduced. The other number (inside of barrel? - not sure exactly where that is) is most likely an assembly number used to keep track of parts in the factory and has no significance.

Huh? The two-year date range I gave you is much narrower than the 14-year range for all "D" prefix revolvers cited in the S&W factory letter.

On the butt, it has a stamped circle with a RE on the left, on the right is has a triangle with a T, a circle with a J, and a stamping that looks like two toothpicks intersecting like a rail-road crossing.

I just aquired a .32 cal 6-shot revolver.Its chrome or nickle with a 6" barrel.The last patent date that I can make out is Sept.14,'08.On the left side of the pipe is stamped".32 LONG CTG"
Ive tried several sites to no avail! The Smith-Wesson site wants $50.00 to help me and on a fixed income its just not in my budget.

Production date would be 1970 - the range used that year was 1K1 to 1K39500 (along with K and 2K prefixes). No idea on the stampings - sounds like something that must have been added after it left the factory. S&W has done many custom stampings of various models for a number of law enforcement agencies, but the ones that I'm aware of are always the name of the agency or its initials, not symbols.

Based on the description and serial number, you have a .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 - 5th Change. The manufacturing dates were from 1910 to 1917, with a corresponding serial number range of 102501 to 263000. The finish would be nickel, not chrome.

Would someone be kind enough to advise when the 38 spc. I acquired from my dad was made? I believe it is either an M&P or model 10.....can't find any model designation on the frame or barrel and the sn is 640389....thanks in advance for your help.
