Man but there is a lot of info in there,,,
But it's somewhat vague on my little snubbie.

Model 36 (no dash) with s/n of 164xxx

As near as I can tell from the S/N's on page 399,,,
Velma (that's her name) was made somewhere after 1957 but before 1962.

Is that as close as I can get without a factory letter,,,
Or did I miss something in my reading?

Yeah, I think that's about as good as you're going to do, Aarond. Sometimes you can narrow things down a bit from the information provided in the text entry. For example, there are sometimes design changes that don't result in a new "dash" variation and the text will say what year they were implemented. I didn't see anything like that in the text for the Mod. 36, though.

So, I hope this means we'll see you answering some of the "what year was my baby born" questions here, right?

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated. The frame is alloy so it must be a 12. There are some stampings when I open the cylinder but nothing of use.

Between 1965 (SN 108087) and 1969 (SN 135464).

You guys have certainly answered enough questions for me.

The only problem is being sneaky enough,,,
To do it at work without my bosses noticing the activity.

One problem with the book,,,
I found several S&W Models I didn't know existed,,,
Hunting down one of those Model 45's is gonna cost me a bucket-o-bucks.

I have a .22 LR equivalent for each of my centerfire Smiths,,,
I had accepted the fact that there wasn't a model 10 or 12 style in .22 LR,,,
So I was going to be happy getting a Taurus or some other 2nd tier handgun as a companion.

Then I saw that danged Model 45,,,
I've already started my dealer looking for one,,,
I know that it will probably cost me a grand or more.

Dang them books anyways,,,
Should have just stayed illiterate!

Hank - SCSW lists it at $375 for "excellent." With the big runup in prices for older revolvers in the last few years, I think you should add another 50% or so to that figure.

Thats serial number places it between 1976 and 1977,,,

Values are a bit tricky but start somewhere around:
$425-475 for Like New In Box
$325-375 for Very Good
$250-300 for Good
$200-250 for Fair

I'm not an appraiser,,,
Take those values with a grain of salt,,,
Because I'm quoting from a book published in 2006.

If it helps I just saw an excellent specimen at my local pawn shop go for $400 even.

Good afternoon.

Just found a pre-M28 Highway patrolman, 5-screw. Serial number is 1337XX. It followed me home. I'm guessing early 1950's, but would like to know the year of production, if possible. Thanks!

Murdock: All the pre-28s had SNs starting with "S", so I'm assuming yours does as well. If that's the case, then between 1954 (starting at S103000) and 1955 (ending with S139999). Nice catch, BTW.

Oh, yeah. Just found the "S" way off the the left in the underlug ejector groove and another in the web between the chambers to the left of the serial number on the cylinder. Thanks.

BTW, is it possible that the OT stocks are Coke grips? They are the diamond type, without numbers on the inside to match the frame. The reason I ask is that they are MUCH more comfortable in the hand than other OT grips I have handled. They may have a slight swell to them that enhances the feel, but if so it is quite subtle.

Yeah, that's the correct time period for sure. That pretty much tears it, now I'm REALLY jealous! Can you post a clear photo taken from the rear of the gun (i.e., from behind the backstrap)? Someone here (maybe not me) should be able to confirm if they're cokes or not.

No, those are not cokes. Cokes have a little more pronounced palm swell and the checkering covers more area and extends down further down on the grip.
See pics below for coke grips. The difference isn't great but it's there.

Thanks for the look. Interestingly, the stocks on this HP are more comfortable in the hand than I have experienced previously with OT stocks.

Do the Cokes have the same cross-section as Ropers? I've never held either so I don't know.
