WOW! My congrad's to Mike!

Excuse me because I'm not a BR competitor, but how did they even measure the group that accurately?

I'm sure that they all fell in the same hole. Measure the hole and subtract one caliber.

Someone could shoot one .30 cal bullet through a piece of paper & I think it would hard to tell if it was exactly .3080" or .3077" in diameter.

I'm sure special equipment must be used & I guess for a new record it must be measured by several people independently.

Wow! I would like to see the target. Any way you slice it, that is pretty impressive.

If one stops to think about the odds of such micro groups occuring compared to what the best benchrest rifles and shooters produce on average, such "unbreakable" records will be eventually shattered. After all, the groups are all zero at the muzzle, aren't they?

Such groups are mostly luck, in my opinion, otherwise they would be commonplace. They happen about as often as the largest group fired by the rifle and shooter producing the record smallest one. All the other groups' sizes are between those extremes. Having once put 5 shots into about an inch at 1000 yard using aperture sights slung up in prone, there's no way I would claim that any sort of accuracy excellence; it was pure luck as the shots were not called that close together.

But it's nice to see it happen.

Regarding the ability to measure them, there are special gauges used to do so and can easily discriminate fractions of one thousandth inch through magnifying glasses. Here's an example of one:

This is from the shooter of that group and thanking everyone

Just a quick note for the moment as this sinks in for me.

Don Shields – Score (15+ Years North Texas Shooters Association)

John Myers – Target Crew (US Team Member F Class 1000 yards and World Record Holder)

Scott Hunter – Gulf Coast Regional Director (All round nice guy!)

John Horn – Ref – 2011 NBRSA 4 Gun Champ

Charles Huckeba – Ref - Hall of Fame

Dr. Tim Oltersdorf – Ref - 6 time USA World Team Member

Gene Buckys – Chair Record Committee

Lowell / Ron / Ken – Records Committee Members

A big THANKS – as these are the guys that make our matches possible and without question maintain the integrity of the targets and record system. I was very fortunate to have all the right people in the right places for this match and my record.

As for measurement – I only saw the target for about 10 seconds up close and can say I’m very happy I did not have to measure that group!
THANKS AGAIN – TO EVERYONE!
More to follow later.

I must admit I was surprised that Bart B had a change of heart calling that group luck as he posted this on another site about how they shoot those small groups.

"The top competitors shooting rifles of their shoulder in position matches have been winning them and setting records with proper full length sized cases for decades. Their ammo in their guns shoot just as accurate as the long range benchrest rigs do."
