There is no "best".
Every gun and every brand/type of shell produces different results.

Buckshot may produce VERY different results than slugs in the same gun.

The only way to find out, is to pattern a variety of ammo in your gun. If you have a gun with interchangeable chokes, you'll also have to try changing them to find what works.

You may well find a situation where your gun with one choke is good with buckshot, but another choke produces tighter groups with slugs.

To further complicate things, one brand of shot or slug may be much better than another brand in your gun.

IN GENERAL, most people have the best luck with the Improved Cylinder as a "all around" choke for both slugs and buckshot.

A rifled choke will shoot sabot slugs but is not recommended for "rifled" slugs. An Improved Cylinder or Modified would be better for rifled slugs, as well as buckshot - particularly size 0 and larger.

Dfariswheel,
Nailed it.

One has to pattern their own gun. Makes no difference what a bbl or choke is marked , only the pattern board will define what YOUR Gun throws WHAT loading for a given TASK.

Even two guns identical using identical loadings can and will shoot different.

Dfarris - gave a best general rule - that being ~ 15 POC [ Imp. Cyl] "tends" to work well. IME - across the board in a variety of guns/ bbls/ POCs from 25 - 15 [ Mod to IC] the 9 pellet 00 Win or Fed loading works "best across the board'. Not saying there are not some better- only as a reference, kinda like the markings on chokes and bbls.

Win/ Fed 1oz Forster slugs from a IC, smoothbore.... Win/ Fed for #4 buck .

Time for buying a 5 pk of a bunch of slugs and buckshot.

I also recommend Bob Bristers' book "Shotgunning: The Art And The Science.

matter of bore , not choke- Brister

Just nit picking here but 15 POC as you call it is generally considered skeet 2 or Lt Mod. IC is usually 10 to 12 depending on the Manufacturer.

But it is all relative as you should try different loads in your gun to see what works.

Yes Sir- you are correct, and I agree. Depends on the actual bore. I was using "round figures" and thinking of a particular bore of one of my guns.

Marty, I've had good luck with full choke for #4 buck. IME, modified is about as tight as I'd try for #) or larger, #1 has worked in a full choke but seems to be very dependant on the individual SG.

Scattergun Tech (before Roger sold it to Wilson) used Modified tubes for their 870 conversions. Mine was great with most all buckshot and patterned slugs well.

Rifled slugs are for smooth barrels, sabot slugs are for rifled barrels. Simple no?

Put it this way - women are Simple, they have "Perogative". Translated that means men are gonna lose, so that is easy.

Shotguns have "Preferences" - not the same thing.

That means woman are technically easier to figure out , Shotguns should not be but can be because woman don't like to change the paper on the pattern board.

Life was simpler when guns had fixed chokes and we had less loads to choose from. We blamed the gun, the ammo, and the womenfolk because we couldn't go shoot.

Simple, Yes.

FWIW I have been testing the factory supplied Mod screw in choke that comes with a 870 Express. It does real well with Win/ Fed 9 pellet 00 buck, Win/ Fed #4 and #1 buck and Win/Fed 1oz slugs.

Its favorite Fiocchi 00 buck. and the 20 yr old Fed slugs...

If I mention the Activ, Peters, Winchester/ Western....loadings that would just date me -so I won't mention them.
