Is this normal?

Just got my faxon 16'' pencil barrel, took it out and inspected it, noticed some scuff marks here and there, I don't give 2 figs about cosmetics, but it takes some force to mar the qpq finish on this barrel, just wanna make sure they didn't sell me a used barrel as new. Could be from the testing & inspection from the factory, but you never know these days.

This is where the gas block screws would go

I took a look at the rifling, well there is rifling but I'm no expert so I cant tell it's used or not.

Pictures 3 & 4 would give me pause! I’d send that along to them and see if they have a ready, plausible explanation. See how they respond.

Also curious though, how was it packaged?

I bought it from Brownells and it came in the faxon plastic bag along with a piece of paper stating the barrel was air gauge tested, magnetic particle inspected n stuff, I doubt they'd sell used barrels as new but the scuff marks kinda got me worried.

Since it came from Brownells and not factory direct from Faxon, there is no telling what that barrel has seen.

Could be somebody bought it, installed it, didnt like it and returned it to Brownells. Id contact them and see what they say

It should look perfectly new. Send it back.

I agree with that - it shouldn't be that marred.

Call Brownell and tell them how it looks. Brownell's return policy is excellent. If you haven't had it that long they probably won't question whether you installed it. They'll make it right.

Agreed with the posters above. I've bought a handful of Faxon barrels and all have looked perfectly new.

"I dont have any previous experience as how a brand new barrel should look like..."

Not like that. The markings themselves probably won't make a difference, but someone installed or tried to install that barrel and then returned it. Brownell's returned it to stock without checking. They should make good.

The marks are not important, IMHO. The question is why the barrel was apparently installed and then removed. Why did it not install, fit or perform correctly?

I also agree that it's not normal. I've sold a lot of barrels at the shops where I've worked, and if we had one that looked like that we definitely would have discounted it. It's not necessarily fired, but the wear on the barrel extension shows it was probably installed on an upper at least once.

Looks perfectly normal--for a well-used barrel. That extension looks like garbage, --your gas block area looks to me like a block was hammered off (don't ask me how I know this) leaving the drag mark behind. The chamber looks fresh though--maybe re-reamed? I've done business with Brownell's for many years never experienced anything like this--this is very disheartening to me--I'm guessing someone in shipping mistakenly sent you a return/defect.

I agree with JamesK, someone tried to install the barrel. I'd return it without question.

The fact that there return policy is excellent could actually be the problem.
The next guy who gets this barrel will go through the same thing.
Just the price we pay for internet convenience.
