1884 Springfield: # stamped on the Stock?

I found a number 59 stamped on the stock near the butt plate. This is the
only remaining marks on the stock. Does any one know the significance or
if it means anything.
Also, how can I look up the serial #, and what can be found out?

Thanks.

I have a book giving serial numbers and dates if you want to pm me with the number. Instead of giving me the entire number i.e. 55667788, x out the last 3 numbers i.e. 55667xxx. This way your gun will stay anonmous yet it wont effect the search. As to the number near the buttplate most likely this is a "barracks mark". Many times you will find military guns with such marks either stamped or painted on. This makes them easier to identify in a hurry.

IMHO, most probably a "rack number". Used to designate where its proper position in the barracks/armory arms rack. These used to be stamped or painted on issue weapons back when they were still routinely kept in living quarters. They helped the individual trooper identify "his" weapon quickly and made inspections/inventory easier.
