But going with the least expensive is is not good either, as that is taking things to the other extreme. Again, budsgunshop.com has the best prices on Nikon scopes. They are selling the 3x9 40mm Prostaff for only $140 But, they also have the 3x9 40mm Buckmasters model for only $190 The Buckmasters scope would be my minimum choice. And you are only talking $50 more than the Prostaff. But I still think that the 2x10 42mm Monarch is a great scope and a great value at the $293 price that Budsgunshop.com has it at. I personally am satisfied with the standard Monarchs and would never go higher and get either the 30mm Monarch Gold scopes, or the even more expensive Monarch X. Best price I've seen listed anywhere for the Monarch Gold 2.5-10x is $610, which is more that DOUBLE the price of the standard Monarch from Budsgunshop.com I'm sure that it is a nicer scope, but I'm also sure that it is not TWICE as good as the regular Monarch. The new Monarch X is even more than that, and sells for over $1,000 I think most people would be best served with a scope from either the Buckmasters or standard Monarch line. . |

I had one Leupold and it was junk and they wouldn't fix it at all said the scope was supposed to be like that. BS the eye relief would change 5" from 6 to 18x after that I traded it for a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x42mm Much better scope in my eyes. I called them and talked to them and sent the scope back to them said it was fine when they checked it. This scope was on a varmint rifle where I carry it on 6x and if I have time dial up to 18x I couldn't do that, had to leave it on 12x so I could get a decent cheek weld.
I now own 2 Nikon Monarch and a D5000 camera with 2 nikkor lenses Optical wise I will stay with Nikon till they prove me wrong. Try looking at the SWFA sample list. Used and refurbed scopes for less money. I have one buddy that was bought 4 scopes on there and they all look factory brand new. http://www.samplelist.com/

TXGunNut...post a review if you decide to put a Redfield on your rifle.
Anybody else with Redfield low light performance? |

scope. Redfield vs. nikon
I went to Nikon Monarchs when Leupolds priced their way out of my class. My Nikons are bright and clear and give me that decided edge in early morning and at dusk. As far as Nikon service, I had a reticle fail on a Nikon Monarch my Remington Model 700 CDL .300 Remington Ultra Magnum, and Nikon flat replaced the scope; no questions asked. I wonder how many of the pro Redfield folks actually have one of the new scopes, and how many are just repeating what they have read in the gun magazines. I shoot rifles at a pretty heavily populated range at least three times a week and have only seem one, exactly one, real in the flesh Redfield mounted on a rifle. I've seen more new Night Force scopes in the last couple of months than the new Redfields.
Good Luck

I have some experience with Nikon scopes, but have never owned a Redfield so I did not vote.
My luck with the Nikons has been good, but that's about all that I can contribute to the discussion. I take a stab in the dark and guess that the Redfields are good, too. |

I like the Nikon Buckmaster, just not impressed with the Prostaff. I liked the Buckmaster over the Monarch when I compared them side by side. Love my Nikon Monarch binocs, though.

As someone earlier said, Nikon may try to weasel their way out ( they did with me ) Leupold fixes anything and sells scopes b/c of it..

I haven't had warranty issues with any of the 3 Nikon products I've been using for the past several years but you make a good point, publius. My first Leupold is barely a year old but at that price level I feel comforted by all the reports of great warranty service. I'll buy another, and the Redfield looks like a good scope for my next project. Current projects could stretch on for years, will give me a chance to monitor the performance of the Redfield.
