Shorter 870 barrels with adjustable chokes?

Looking for barrels under 26-28 inches with adjustable chokes, noticing how unwieldy the 28 gets off the trap range. You know, actually carrying the thing on a hunt. would like 20 inches or so but all shorter ones seem rifled or IC only. I want to be able to choke a tight pattern on a bird but not have a long barrel to tote around.

24" is the shortest you can get with chokes i think

k the 4 inches may be a good reduction, hopefully a gunstore will have one, all i see is 18.5, 20, 28.

Remington does not offer a 24" barrel in any models. They at least used to offer the 3.5" super mag in a turkey version with a 23" barrel, but last time I checked they sould not sell the barrels separately.

They used to offer a 21" turkey barrel that was threaded for chokes as well as a 20" slug barrel with iron sights that was threaded. I have 1 of each. Not sure if they still offer those barrels or not.

It has been a while since I checked so they may not offer these any longer.

The 870 Express Tactical and the 870 Express Tactical Grey each have an 18.5 inch barrel and a screw in breacher choke. Remove the tactial choke and screw in a regular one. The difference between the two seems to be a bead sight or a gsr with a rifle front sight. http://www.remington.com/product-fam...model-870.aspx

Try callling Remington and ask if they have any berrels that aren't listed and tell them what you need. If they don't have it another option is to have a smith thread a barrel for chokes. Zippy had a bad experience with a smith once and recommends makins sure whoever you use does a lot of them.

jmr40 they do make a 24" barrel on the spr453 and u can buy after market barrels in 24" for the 870 like i sade i have one and i just double checked it

I bought a Turkey gun for this very reason. It has a 21 inch vent rib barrel with the Rem Choke system...I hardly shoot it now since I have a Benelli...I'd sell it to you.

My 870, purchased in 1980 w/ a 30" full choke fixed barrel (rem choke was not even on the horizon, though win choke was) has had a steadily shrinking barrel ever since. One hunt with the gargantuan 30" tube was enough, and I paid big bucks for a fixed 26" full barrel. I also bought a 26" IC barrel and it made for a nice combo for all the years I small game/bird hunted. If you are looking for a universal barrel length, you might shop around for some of the old fixed 26" tubes. The 2"off from a 28" seem more than 2" , if that makes sense.

I'm strictly and deer and turkey man now, and my 870 is short and stubby to ease carrying in the dark, over many miles, and to point easily on incoming toms. My turkey set up is a 20" Rem choked, rifle sighted, slug barrel. The IC and slug tubes disappeared long ago, and screwed in to old reliable is a Rem factory turkey super full, the tightest one Rem makes. The rifle sights allow you to slide the pattern around until it's centered where you need it.

I hope to put it to good use in about 10 days.

MOA,

The SPR 453 is not made by Remington. It was imported from Russia, but no longer sold by Remington. You may have an aftermarket barrel 24" long, but once again it was not made by Remington.

I have a 24" 870 barrel, but it left Remington as a 30" barrel and was cut back and rethreaded for chokes. But you cannot buy a 24" barrel from Remington for any Remington product.

I also have the 21 inch turkey barrel w/ choke tubes. It has a mid bead as well. It makes for a very compact and quick gun.

I had an 18" barrel threaded for RemChoke tubes by Mike Orlen. Fast, fairly priced, expertly done. It is admittedly gilding the lily for that barrel, but it's my gun and my cash.

I'd highly recommend Mike.

I bought an 18.5 inch remchoke barrel directly from remington a few years ago for my son. Was around $150 IIRC. He loves it for bunny hunting in thick brush.
