Steel targets

Do very many or any local ranges allow shooting steel targets?
Just wondering.

I don't know where you are living but here we have a large fixed steel collection avail. to members & guests for pistols from 15-100 yds. along with the rifle steel out to about 500 yds.
We are self policed, so no range master setting rules. About 300 members with 4 pistol bays available 30yd. wide x 100 yd. deep. Members who work as SOs during the pistol & 3 gun matches have access to another $28000 worth of match steel from MGM.
Propeller plate racks, texas stars(whirlgigs), poppers, swingers, turn & drops and triple drops.
The small town setting has worked so far for 20+ years without stupid people destroying too much stuff or hurting themselves.

My range...AGC at Marriottsville does --- but it has to be a certain width and armor plate --- fired at certain sanctioned matches; otherwise air rifle at 25 to 100 yards, 100 yards for rimfire and black powder roundball. 50 yard pistol range is sanctioned matches only --- and our 200 yard range for pistol or sanctioned rifle, shotgun, machinegun, and 3 gun matches.

My local range has a steel target range for pistols. About 6 poppers of various sizes and two racks of six 8-inch discs that are resettable with a long rope.
They have another "steel-challenge" range which is only used for special events and club matches.

Another club has a single 10" gong set at 100 yds on the rifle range. They also allow shooters to bring their own steel targets providing the targets are store bought type "appropriate for the caliber of firearm"

A new indoor range near me has two bays. One side, four lanes, is 10 yards, paper targets only, handguns only. The other side is 15 yards, steel targets and allows up to .223 / 5.56 rifles. I can't get myself to imagine shooting a .223 at a steel target only 15 yards away. They claim no one has gotten hit with splatter. I’d shoot lead handgun at steel 15 yards away, but not a .223 rifle.

I agree Mike, that sounds pretty sketchy to me also.

Locally we have one semi-public range. Steel targets are 15 yard minimum for hand gun, 50 yards for rifle. Wouldn't want to shoot at steel with a rifle at 15 yards, even if it has a big angle
