T/C Compass in .308, is 1/12 twist OK for 175g bullets ?

Dialing things in slowly, using my buddy the Jarhead Gunny barrel break in procedure of shoot a round, clean, shoot a round, clean.....

Out of the box accuracy is superb, even with every day hunting ammo, within the 1 MOA guarantee, but I see Federal Gold Match 175g BTHP, the good stuff, on sale at Palmettto (yeah, I know, slow as hell to ship) for 85 cents a round shipped 10 boxes at a time. That is getting pretty close to reload costs for similar components, so here is my question-

With the 1 in 12" twist, would the 175g bullet be too heavy ? Lots of folks claim better trajectory with 175g than the 168g offering, especially at long range.

Any opinions ?

Thanks in advance !

1:10" twist seems more common these days; I don't know what's "ideal" for that bullet weight. But even if it's adequate, no one can tell you how your particular rifle will shoot with a given factory load. Best thing is buy one box first, and see for yourself how it shoots. Then go ahead and buy in bulk if you're satisfied.

I really want one of these bad boys, great deal it seems. From what I've read, you're maxing out what you can stabilize reliably with 1:12" at 175 gr, but no personal experience since I don't own a 308.

A 12 twist should shoot most 175/180 gr bullets without any issue. I own 308's with 10,11, and 12 twist barrels and shoot 130-180 gr bullets in all of them with good accuracy. I'd bet the Federal 175's should be OK, but somewhere around 180 gr is going to be the limit. Most 200 gr bullets won't shoot well. Although I've seen them work in some rifles with 12 twists.

It is the length that matters, not necessarily the weight, but they do go hand in hand, usually. Some bullets of the same, or similar weight, are longer than others. While a Nosler 190 gr bullet might be just fine, a Berger 185 might not. Sometimes you just have to try them in an individual rifle.

Thanks for the advice.

I ordered the mentioned premium ammo from Palmetto, and believe it or not it has already shipped.

In addition, I received the $75 gift card rebate in under 2 weeks !

A good change of pace from both Palmetto and S&W.
