My Bedford Country rifle

Dreams do come true ! I just had the opportunity to accuire a Bedford style Rifle that was built by the well known contemporary riflesmith G.Rummell from the Bedford Pennsylvania area. It is an early Peter White circa 1803, with a 42" Green Mt. .50 caliber barrel, small Siler flintlock, exhibition grade curly maple stock, raise carved, engraved brass patchbox, engraved sideplate, and toe plate and two engraved sterling silver inlays. All the brass and silver parts were hand made and the stock carved from a slab of maple.
I have wanted a long rifle of this style for many, many years and finally got one.

My new deer rifle !

Bedford rifle range report

Last Friday morning I went to the range and sighted it in at 35 yards off a bench, no bags just elbows.
On a CMP B-19 target center I hit a 7 at about 6 o'clock with my first shot. A 9 at 7 o'clock, a 9 at 2 o'clock cutting the 10 ring and 2 touching at about 5 and 6 o"clock in the X. I didn't even have to adjust the sights.

I wanted to shoot a bunch more BUT it started raining so I left.

I used 70 grs. FFF Goex, .490 ball, .018 pillow ticking patch lubed with Hoppes #9 Plus, 4F in the pan.

I know it can do better, I'm the weak link, 57 year old eyes and not as steady as I once was.

I do think I have that broad side of a barn door thing covered though.

How did that .018 patch, load for you? At some point, you may want to experiment with .495 RB. Also, I bet you drew a lot of attention at the range. If folks could see shoot more Side-Cocker, they would fall in love with traditonals. ....

The .490 ball with the .018 ticking loaded tight. I will try the .495 ball one of these days. Thinner patch too.

No one at the range when I went with Becky ( the Bedford ) but I have shot my other flint rifle Suzanna ( North Carolina long rifle, iron furniture .40 cal 42" Getz barrel in a curly maple stock.) when other folks were there. I drew a small crowd as most have never seen a real flint rifle shot except on TV or in a movie. I enjoy explaining all about them, the history etc. as well as showing the folks all of my tools, pouch and horn that I made myself. I always offer everyone to fire it if they want to. I do this in hope of promoting the BP sport and our history as Americans.

All in the name of promoting M/L's

That is pretty much what happens to me and often wind up giving a mini-class. Folks seem to appreciate knowing how to load and shoot and take much satisfaction in learning a new skill. ...

Sounds like you have the makings of being a good instructor. .....

My god that stock...It's also called "tiger maple" for obvious reasons. Being a weekend wood worker, I dream of wood that beautiful. Here in Texas, you have to special order stuff like that. You are a lucky man gunny.

Beautiful rifle. Enjoy.
Has the lock been modified?
BTW, it is Bedford county, not "country".

Lock question

The lock plate was modified to match the original. You are correct it is BEDFORD COUNTY, not country.

In my haste I made a typing error.

Very, very sweet! A good choice. It will do well for deer. I can also attest to its efficacy on elk and black bear.
