Advice wanted RE: LEO career

I am 52 and in better than average health(surfer). I'm a member of my local PD's Citizens On Patrol. I have been in a couple of situations where I "stood by" while Officers(weapons drawn) approached BG's. I was ordered to "take cover "; happily, no shots were fired. I gotta say, I was energized by the experience! I get along well with LEOs, as well as people in general. My wife thinks I'm losin' it to even consider this. My next step would be to become a Reserve Officer, and see if I want to pursue a full-time LEO career. I'm sure I will get mixed opinions: of course, this is assuming I can make the grade. If I can, please give me your thoughts(current and retired LEOs, please)

Thanks for your input!

At 52, most individuals would be most concerned with passing the physical course. That does not seem to be a factor in your situation. The next question is can you spare the time to attend an academy? If you can, I'd say go for it.

And Hans, may the force be with you

I was a reserve before I went full time and I am in an auxiallary now. Sounds like you'd enjoy it. Aside from your wife's opinion, what are the other possible negatives? Many depts have different policies for their reserve officers and training programs can be very different. Some require officers to be certified by the state, while others have in-house training programs. There are still a few that will swear you in without much training at all, but almost all of them will require you to pass a physical, qualify with a weapon and go through some type of background check.

Good Luck!

Hans,

LAPD is about 1,000 of full strength. Give them a try. Put in all over because a lot of agencies are having trouble recruiting. Good luck!
