Need advice for a rimfire scope.

Here's the story, a friend of mine recently bought a used Ruger 77/22. The rifle itself is in excellent condition, however its got a Simmons 3X9 scope on it that has obviously seen better days. The problem is that once you turn the power up past 5X it gets somewhat blurry. Adjusting the eye piece doesn't help. I've been told that its because its a centerfire scope and at higher powers is focused for longer distances. I've also been told that what he needs is a rimfire specific scope. And these same folks have told me that a scope with an adjustable objective lens will cure the problem.
Scopes really aren't my thing. So here I am to ask those who know. Is all this stuff I've been told true?
Now advice on what to get. My friend wants a variable scope preferably 2X7, but a 3X9 would be fine. He also doesn't want to spend a whole lot of money. Looking at the Midway catalog we found rimfire scopes by BSA & Simmons for about $65. Bushnell lists a 3X9 Air Gun scope with an adjustable objective for about the same price. Wouldn't an air gun scope work fine on a .22RF? There is also a Weaver 2.5X7 for $120. Would it be worth the extra money?
Ok, tell me what we need and what would be the best buy?

Airgun scopes are able to take great amounts of recoil. I believe most of them are set up for a 33" paralax. I use Leupold rimfire 2X7 compact scopes on my 77/22 and one of my 10/22s. I know thay are more pricy than what you were probably looking for I just refuse to compromize.

Look into Tasco scopes.

I to am a Leupold fan, but have found Bausch & Lomb to have very fine optics. They have started a new line, 3200 series I believe, so you might find a 3000 series on clearance. They are quality scopes and you might find one well under the Leupold price range. I don't think they make one specifically for a .22 though.

22 Scope?
My choice for anything 22...Rim Fire and Center Fire through 223 is a Bushnell SPORTSVIEW 1 inch scope. The 3x9-32 will focus to 25 yards at 6 power only. I found that the 4x12-40 will focus to less than 15 feet. There is no telling how many ground hog and squarrel I have shot using them.

I have a BSA Deerhunter I paid 49.00..Its a 3x9x40....I don't know didly about scopes...but this one seems to work....its sharp..bright....1/4clicks...
