HS-6 in 9mm

Anyone use HS-6 powder in the 9mm with 124 grain bullets? Like ,dislikes? --Thanks

Don't have a 9mm but use it in 38/357 just cause I have a keg of it. It burns dirty. It was designed for shotguns mostly for heavy loads.

I use it and don't have any issues with it. It's much cleaner than Unique.

HS-6 is an excellent powder for 9mm. I have used it with both 115 and 124 grain bullets. The burn rate is right on for 9mm.

It is not as economical as some others, but has good case fill, meters easily, and gives good velocity with softer loads. Shoot clean in all my 9mm pistols.

It is not the best choice if you are looking for higher velocity. power pistol is a good choice for faster movers.

To the first responder: IIRC, .38 SPecial and .357 Mag like a faster burn rate powder. This may be the reason HS-6 is dirty for you, it has a medium burn rate.

HS-6 is my favorite 9mm powder. It fills the case well and burns very clean in my expierence. In fact I'm running out of it and can't seem to find anymore.
Not that it really matters 'cause I can't find any primers either.

I like it just fine in .45Colt in bullets over 260 grains. So does John Linebaugh.

As far as "dirty" one of my favorite colors is the ash of HS-6 on my SS Redhawk. It cleans up real easy and I can easily fire 200 rounds without the revolver binding up.

If it doesn't work good for you in 9mm I am sure you can unload it easily.

That's what I've found. Lately, all I've been able to get is Titegroup (bleh) and Unique but HS-6 and AA#5 are my favorites for 9mm and 45acp.

You can get top velocity without top pressure.

I agree about HS-6 being dirty in the .357, but in the tiny 9mm case it burns clean.

Standard primers work fine for me, but some like magnum primers with HS-6 in the 9mm.

I'm glad you guys posted this. I have some old Win 540, which is the same powder, and I've only tried it in 38 and 357. There was a lot of unburned powder with both. Since I wasn't all that impressed, I've been wondering what to use it up on. I'll try some 9mm.

HS6 was the first powder that I tried in 9mm. That was 30 plus years ago, and I'm still using it because it's such an excellent choice for that caliber. I use it with 115 grain JHP's running at about 1150 to 1200fps. I use standard primers, and it always burns completely and cleanly in my guns.

It also works very well in .40 S&W.

I have heard that it is the best choice for 9mm with lead bullets. I've not tried it but have always been wanting to. I will have to check my LGS to see if they got their shipment of Hodgdons yet.
I hate shooting lead, filthy stuff, but it's all I can get right now.
HS-6 is definitely on my "next load to try list" for 9mm.

I tried it but could not get the accuracy I could with Titegroup. It does fill the case better but that is also a negative. The range from starting to max is larger so finding the sweet spot was difficult. I may go back someday and try it again with some different bullets or something. I hear people like it but my results varied I guess.

I have tried a few rounds of HS-6, 6.4 with 124 LRN @ 1.10 that worked just fine in both Ruger P89 and a HP C9. But the main reason I picked some up is to work up some loads with magnum primers for my 995 Carbine. It also works for my shotguns reloads so it will get used eventually.

I run HS-6 in my P-94. Runs clean and excellent accuracy with 115gr JHP's. Haven't tried it with lead yet but given the cost of JHP's these days I'll be trying that soon I'm sure.

I've loaded HS-6 with 115g 9mm and it works well enough. But's better suited for my 5" Barretta than my 3.5" Kahr. If your 9mm is a compact, I'd recommend a faster powder - like 231 - at least for 115g's. It has a burn rate that is probably better suited for 124g bullets, however. If I loaded 124's, I'd definitely give HS-6 a whirl.

The main reason why I have HS-6 is for medium powered .357 and .44 rounds. And it works particularly well for 38+P, and hot rounds for my 1911 .45.

Overall, I like HS-6. Versatile.
