S&W SD40 or SW40VE. Dead nuts reliable and if you can master the trigger of the SW40VE, you'll shoot everything better. Also, 15 round mags for the SW40VE will fit the SD40. It'll run you 1/2 the cost of a Glock 22 and has better ergonomics.

Don't get me wrong, I love the G22 but for the money, the SD/SW is a great deal. The SD/SW are kind of like a higher capacity G23's.

Glock is my first choice ... But S&W 2.0 compact is probably the non Glock pistol I'd pick ..

Paul Barrett, in his book on Glock mentions that the rounds were acquired from the S&W booth at SHOT Show, but indicates that they were samples and doesn't suggest that there was any wrongdoing involved nor even characterize the acquisition negatively.

How could we have forgotten about the FNX 40? It's another great option. The aggressive grip texture can be a turn-off for some people but it sure gets the job done as far as non-slip textures. I might have chosen it over the PX4 had I not discovered the low-profile kit to get rid of those batwing safeties. After that inexpensive conversion, the soft-shooting PX4 was just too hard to beat.

For you late comers , I got into the .40 game in the early days with a HK P7 M10 ! Fantastic pistol and cartridge .Still works fine , accurate , reliable .

Sweet. I've only ever seen a handful of those, but the people who have them seem to love them. I know I love my P7PSP.

Don't ever lose a magazine. Last one I saw was $250.

Arrrgh, that book by Paul Barrett is the source of that swiping of .40 S&W samples but I borrowed the book from my buddy and I don't own it so I cannot grab it from the shelf and reference it. Memory tells me that indeed the author did paint a picture of the ammo swiped and a pistol reverse engineered from the ammo.

If you have access to the book, please check?

Just to add...

That book was, in my opinion quite interesting and it was definitely not written by a man that was in awe or indebted to Glock. I found much of the book to be quite critical of the operation as a whole and of Gaston Glock specifically.

The S&W Sigma was the only 40 I ever owned that could shoot a good group at 25 yards, better than my Sig229, much better than my G23.

Amen to the cheap police trade-in 40 caliber pistols!

My Glock 22 gently used with box and two mags was $280.

My Beretta PX40, a bit scratched up but perfectly functional, was something like $179.

The best was my Beretta 96. Some site was selling a bunch of police trade-in 96's. One was an American DAO slide on top of a DA/SA Italian frame. Apparently everyone was afraid of it. I won it for a $149 bid. It's a great-shooting pistol with no annoying safety or decocker. The trigger is fantastic.

My FiL got a couple of nice police trade-in 40 calibers for super cheap also. His Glock inspired me to find one for myself, and he is extremely happy with his Springfield. I don't recall the exact prices, but they were both inexpensive and barely worn.

I agree on the Sig 229, and just to be different, a Browning Hi Power in 40 , or Taurus PT 100/101. I like single action triggers with a DA option and thumb safeties.

I, too, have a special affinity for the Smith 4006. I bought into the .40 early on and purchased my 4006 right after they were released in 1991. It remains one of my most valued handguns. Here's a pic...

In .40, I also own a CZ75B duotone, Taurus PT100, Star Firestar, and an FNH FNS-40.

My choice for a new .40 today would be the M&P 2.0 or the FNS-40. Then, maybe the Glock.

Quite a few very good models to choose from in today's market.

DA/SA: Beretta 92 and PX4, CZ 75's, P-07, and P09, FN FNX, HK P-30, Sig 226, 229, and 2022.

Striker: Beretta APX, FN FNS, HK VP-40, Sig 320, Steyr M-A1 and L-A1, S&W M&P, Walther PPQ.

Get out and hold as many as you can side by side to see what you like the best. There may be ranges near you that have gun rentals which is a good way to make a short list in some cases.

.40 gets a bad reputation for its "snappy" recoil. Having first tried it in compact polymer-framed guns, I initially wrote off any ballistic advantages as not worth the unpleasant shooting experience. Getting a chance to try it in some of the full-sized DA/SA guns listed here caused me to do a 180 on .40 S&W.

The weight of the steel guns does exactly what you'd expect it to. The FNX is balanced just well enough to make the cut. The PX4 is remarkably well balanced and changes the recoil distribution slightly with its rotating barrel system. If you want to carry a full-sized forty, the PX4 is my top recommendation by far. (Of course, I recommend installing the low-profile kit for concealed carry.)

I have two full sized 40 guns: a p226 and an M&P 40

I also have 357 SIG barrels for both of them so that adds a little value IMO.

If I could only have one and I was buying today I would flip a coin, they are both excellent weapon systems. It's really whether I feel like a striker or a DA/SA at the time.

The new M&P 2.0 40 would likely be my choice for you. It's a soft shooting gun and I have thousands of high power reloads through mine (mines a 1.0) without ever a single issue with the gun. You can't beat the 15 round capacity and very few guns in it's class can match that. (The glock does but...) Also magazines are steel, which I prefer over plastic glock mags, and they are available cheaply and widely.
