I bought a marlin 30 30 last year--very well-made and equipped IMO.

Both of my 2016 Marlins have been great. A 30-30 stainless, and the 1895 45/70. A vast improvement over earlier models. But then I noticed that, when I bought the first one. Otherwise, I wouldn't have. It worked out so well, that I bought the 336SS, with a Henry 45/70 in between.

I used an ancient 1886 .33 Winchester to nail a running coyote years ago. I missed with shot #1 when he was walking, but got him on #2 as he was running away. Lucky shot! Working that lever fast between shots is cool, as is working a bolt action quickly between shots. I used to own a bunch of vintage Winchesters (94's, 92's, octogons, 38-40's, etc.) and Marlins, back before "her", but that's another story. I managed to hang onto a couple of .30-30's, but now the boy is laying claim to them.

I took my Winchester 94 out hunting this evening after using my Ruger Hawkeye all week. It's easy to forget how handy a lever action carbine is for poking around the woods. Truly one of the most classic hunting rifles ever built.

This seems an appropriate first post since it is lever gun research which brought me to TFL.

My first lever gun:

I like guns that go bang, and a Marlin 1895GBL will certainly do that. Those Winchesters sure are pretty, hope I can hang on to my mortgage payment.

I picked a new 1895 CB (the short barrel) 45-70 about a year and a half ago. It's been a lot of fun, it hits the target where I aim, and has worked perfectly. After many factory rounds of ammo, and lot's of reloads, I'm certainly happy I reload these 45/70s. They can get expensive, but they really have the bang.

I have had a Winchester 9422 for years, and recently I picked up a 9417 in .17HMR. I didn't even know Winchester made a lever action in .17HMR until I saw this one.

I am so attached to Levers that I own 7.
1. 1980 Browning BL-22
2. 2018 Browning Micro Midas BL-22
3. 2018 Henry Golden Boy
4. 2018 Henry Small Game Rifle
5. 2018 Winchester 1892 44 Mag
6. 1978 Winchester 9422 XTR
7. 1955 Marlin 39A Mountie

I shoot my rifles on a rotation basis daily almost. None of them can compare to the Winchester 9422. That one is just amazing to shoot.

My first gun was a Marlin 1897 for my birthday in 1955. I was given a choice of
three 22 rifles and what kid in 55 wouldn't pick the cowboy gun? I've got about
a dozen Wins & Marlins and one Savage 99. All are older models. I don't buy the
new stuff, replicas or imports.
