Pedersoli 1863 Sharps Sporting
Got new repo - 1863 Sporting Sharps made by Pedersoli cal 45. Beautiful rifle, but ignition does not work at all. I have Pedersoli 1859 Sharps carbine, it needs a one cap warm-up, after that works flawlessly. But this Sporting rifle shoots only after every 4-5 attempts after I have wasted several caps for empty shots. I have opened and cleaned the block, but it didn't help. RWS 1218 caps are used.
Also there seems to be blow-back issue as when shooting then hot sparks from caps fly to my forehead. This does not happen with my 1859 carbine. Any ideas, how to get this thing to work? |

Is this percussion?
If so, Larry Flees does fantastic work in increasing the reliability of ignition on Sharps guns. He did my 1859 Pedersoli Sharps. Steve |

The blow back out the nipple sounds like a nipple isssue. If the gun was used somebody probably opened it up. I used RWS 1081 caps with my Sharps and never had a problem with real bp. It didn't like Pyrodex tho.

How is the mainspring? If weak, then it will allow for blowback.

it's possible but very doubtful that a brand new Pedersoli sharps would need a new nipple or main spring
Your problem could be:::::::: The Sharps ignition channel makes two roughly 90 degree turns after the nipple Pull the nipple and in the drop breech block on the left side is a clean out screw. Most likely it has shavings in the channel from machining, Possibly never got fully bored you can get a drill bit right size and long enough to run through by hand and clean the junk out. Also through the ignition port into the chamber and through the channel under the nipple. Then flush it clean with brake clean or carb clean Also till problem is resolved use holy black in FFFg granulation. It ignites easier and I imagine yours requires musket caps. My 54. cal does |
