Boy am I glad that I have both. But the 870 that I have is just way too long. My newly acquired Mossberg 590 is half the size.

NOTHING, until you have enough rounds through it to know 1) that it works at all, 2) how it shoots, and 3) that you are good enough with it not to screw up shooting it under pressure. You might change your mind about that pistol grip stock after a couple hundred rounds of buckshot at the range.

JMHO, YMMV, but watch the movie The Ghost And The Darkness if you don't yet know why smart people don't depend on an untested, unfamiliar weapon in matters of life and death.

I guess that's because your 590 is a PGO shotgun. I suggest breaking it in with about 100 rounds of 00 buck and then letting us know how that worked out for you.

Well...you guys are kind. Caring individuals. Really appreciate the care among fellow citizens. I will and always have broken in a firearm before I take it into my life saving tool category. Was just wondering from my massive stash of shotgun ammunition which would be the best. Not too knowledgeable on shotguns and their ammo.

I'll post a pic of the shotgun if I haven't already. It is really short though.

Also, I completely agree with the whole pistol grip thing. I know already actually, that I won't be too fond of it at all. It's for home defense and I don't plan to shoot 100 rounds at a time through it during a self defense shooting. I am in Miami a very popular thing here lately are home invasions. So I sleep with my handgun and the AR-15. However..I want it to be the 590.

Any pointers on the pistol grip? Besides trying it out and eventually changing it?

I would rock that "tactical" PGO as the greatest thing since sliced bread on a local forum to you... Then sell it for $20... AT LEAST

and turn around and order a standard style stock...

Always give Vic Havlin a try as he usually has "take offs" in stock... might find a walnut SET for 40.00-45.00 but if you like black, a rear wooden stock (my preference) painted or not or a synthetic stock for 30 or so... As for mobility in small areas... a PGO is only easier to get under your chin... not through a narrower hallway...

Everything about these guns is easier and more comfortable as well as productive with the Elmer Fudd furniture.

Hogdogs! Thank you! That was very insightful. I think I may do just that. Hell imagining a 12 gauge being shot with that pistol grip. Doesn't seem that it'll be too fun at all. Any pics of yours?

20 gauge but similar recoil as a 12 since the 20 is a lighter gun...

In this image it has a "first generation" or so Choate AR type stock. I got it in hopes wifey would start shooting it... Didn't work and it wasn't so useful.

I put my PGO back on as it was daily carried in my dumptruck as I hauled some expensive stone and often took cash as payment.

Here is how it looked after I got it back after 10 years in an evidence room...

I didn't have the case prior.... I guess the person who used it in an Ag Ass. crime supplied it... It was stolen along with EVERY OTHER GUN I OWNED... Only one recovered...

BTW, I bought it from ol' Service Merchandise with the PGO as the "Camper's Special" or some such title... The combo would have had the long barrel and full stock IIRC. But back then, these guns were CHEAPER than the long counterpart as it had less material involved and no big crowd scooping them up... This was like $159 rather than the $179 for a full stock gun.

mossberg 500! can't go wrong with it an when you add this aftermarket magazine tube with 20" barrel it just looks like a beast.

One thing I factor in is overall durability of a weapon... The extended mag tube on a mossberg is a BAD THING, IMHO...

One thing I am always aware of is that a ding in the tube could render your "Pump 'em up carry-o-bean repeatin' shotgun" into a single shot...

JUST ONE LITTLE DING!!!

With a 6 round (5 actually) tube most of the tube (all of the super sensitive length) is behind the fore end or under it.

If in a heat of the moment situation, you whack that tube on a door frame... you may find less than stellar performance from the repeatability aspect...

This is one benefit I will give to the Rems or 590 type tube... those extensions are usually thick machined contraptions and if securely anchored, should take a bit more abuse before failing to function...

that tube is a OEM product so i think you would have to hit very very hard to mess the blueing up. or run it over with a truck to bend it.

Custom, You will find the tube of the 500 is far thinner than you realize...

In our hand to hand drills with shotguns, it was routine to bang up the mag tube badly...

I had 2 smooth rods, one for 12ga, and one for my 20ga... These were run down the tube CAREFULLY and used to peen out the dings...

But we also suffered broken stocks too... we played hard I guess...

We were drilling for real world possibilities... It was a "colorful" circle of friends and we had all the reasons needed to determine this training may be needed...

We also drilled with fists, clubs, and simulated sharp edged weapons...

We always had our first aid gear out and if we didn't need it, we didn't train hard enuff...

"Freeze spray" was always needed...
