17wsm
Can anyone tell me whats going on with 17wsm. They have seemed to stop making it. Are they going to start making it again, or do I need to switch to 17 hmr? Thanks for any input given.

I dont think the WSM ever really caught on. Not in the volume the HMR did.
I get the improved performance of the WSM, but the HMR is just more popular |

Thank you for the response. I just talked to Hornady. They said there not planning on making the round in the future.

The biggest issue with the 17 WSM is the rifles available. Winchester does a horrible job of supporting their ammunition, they don't make sure the rifle manufacturers will support their products. There just weren't any good rifles built for the cartridge. The way they're going the 21 Sharp is DOA as well.
You need good rifles to have a cartridge be successful, not everyone wants a Savage rimfire. Most people I know who are enjoying the 17 WSM have a rare Ruger 17/77 WSM or have built a custom rimfire. They aren't using the B-Mag or Mark II for the most part. Then there is the fact that materials for ammunition are in short supply. I can see why Hornady might be dropping or just doing seasonal runs of the ammunition. Hornady might want to focus on their own magnum rimfire cartridge as well, instead of making Winchester's.

I see plenty of Winchester ammo available online, and a little bit of Federal.
But I wouldn't be surprised if only Winchester makes it from now on, and only for a few years.

i have a b mag...did some beading and a little crown work and it shoots pretty good now..
i did stock up on the ammo when it was available and i do have a pretty big stash....but i hope they do make it again...i would buy more to add to the stack i was always under the impression that winchester made all of the WSM ammo for everybody...no matter what the label hornady or federal or winchester

It’s showing up on more and more dealers shelves for reasonable prices. Winchester did indeed make the 17 WSM ammo for other companies.
The B-Mag is okay for the price point. Drilled and taped with supplied steel bases, barrel threaded into receiver, dual action screws, accu-trigger. The cock on closing and magazine are a little quirky but the price needs to be considered when discussing it and the 17 WSM. |

This is the problem with all "new" rimfire rounds, we are completely at the mercy of the ammo makers. Center fire rounds are reloadable, and brass can be found, or made, and the guns can, at worst, be rechambered/rebarreled to an inproduction round, if you want. With a rimfire round, your options are much more limited.
The 5mm Remington Magnum should be seen as an object lesson. Remington introduced it in 1969, but because it didn't sell as well as Remington hoped, they discontinued it in 1974. When the ammo supply dried up, the rifles became useless, and essentially worthless. For the best part of the last 50 years, a single box of 5mm Remington Mag ammo was worth more than the rifle, and of course, one fired, was completely gone. It seems that Aguila has brought the 5mm Rem back into production, after it being unavailable for about 45 YEARS. ![]() The only way to be absolutely certain of having enough of any of the new rimfire rounds (the various .17s or any others) is to acquire a lifetime supply of ammo, while they are new and still in production. FOR me, that would be a moderate size truckload, but then, I'm old. If you're a young shooter, a tractor trailer load might be enough, and that won't be cheap. Sad part of our system, the market is driven not by the merits of the product, but by its sales, and many fine guns and cartridges have been created, then later dropped by the industry because of "low" sales.

My friend has a 5mm rem jet I think it was. He swears by it as the nest rifle ever. Around 06 or 07 when centurion made a big run of ammo and it was affordable he didn’t have a credit card and had me buy a bunch for him online.

5mm Rem Mag / 5mm Rem
Aguila made the last two runs of ammo.
