Modern tracers are not white phosphorus. They are made out of pretty much the same material as the stars in roman candles or other fireworks.

Didn't think so. WP shows up a lot brighter than what I was seeing. (These
were .38s fired from a S&W Model 60).

Mike Irwin,

Sorry, guess I didn't say it right. In WW II at the end of the belt they decreased the spacing of the tracers to indicate to the pilot he was near the end of his ammo. Unfortunately it also indicated this to the Japanese. I wasn't there so I can only repeat what I heard, which I heard this on either the Military channel of the History channel, can't remember which.
