What is your favorite range to shoot an AR-15?

I recently bought a Nikon 3-9X40 P223 scope for my rifle, and Hornady Superformance ammo ($26/box) allows me to shoot sub-MOA in an $800 PSA rifle with a basic nitride A2-profile barrel. I've been wanting to stretch it out to 200 and 300 yards- my father in law has a laser rangefinder and with the P223 and Nikon's Spot-On App, I'm thinking it should be a breeze, and a fair bit of fun.

What ranges do you like to shoot your .223/5.56 rifle at?

My AR

I shoot mine at 200, 300, and 600 yards on a regular basis.
It shoots way better than me at all yardages.

200 yards should be easy, 300 might be more difficult. Scope isn't the issue, more the ammunition. I've shot 400 but the ammo I buy wasn't cutting it for me. Match grade or hand loads would have made the difference.

Edit - And the size of the target

I have only taken my AR out to 200 yards, but I enjoy shooting everything from 25-100, so far. I would like to get better with irons and stretch it out to 300. If you can already hit sub-MOA with your current set up, I would be very apt to be pushing 300-400yds and longer, if it were me.

I have shot targets at 300 with my AR at a range but I train for self defense and static target shooting is not really a big part of this.

I shoot more at 100 yards with rifles than any other range. If I can hit at 100 then I don't worry about closer ranges. I like to shoot at longer ranges and 200 yards is the 2nd most common range.

The club that I belong to has target stands out to 300, and they don't mind improvised stands placed farther, but about 350 is the practical limit. I don't like to shoot at 300 unless I'm by myself at the range. There is just too much time involved to walk the 300 yards each way while other shooters wait. At 200 it isn't so bad.

I have a friend who is a hay farmer who lets me shoot. But not during growing season and he leases the land for hunting during the fall. Which means I can shoot there from January to early April each year. I could shoot to 1000+, but so far haven't tried anything past 600. I bring an ATV to check targets when I shoot there.

Last time out at the 300 meter range I took a bike!

Hornady Superformance ammo is their current brand name for their old "Light Magnum" line. Basically, it's Max load factory ammo.
Anyway, 300 yards isn't a big deal for any .223 load. It's considered close range for NRA matches. They shoot 10 rounds in 70 seconds at 300.
You won't need ranger finders or any daft phone app(no 'app' will help). You will need to know your scope's adjustments and sight your rifle in 1.4" high at 100 to be on target at 200 and 6.9" low at 300 using standard Superformance 55 grain ammo. Superformance Match HPBT ammo is a slightly different critter. Its 75 grain match bullet starts a bit slower and is sighted in 1.2" high at 100 to be on target at 200 and is still 6.9" low at 200.

There are 3 people at my local range that shoot out to 300 yards.
All the others shoot 25 yards.

Not ragging, or picking, or anything else along those line.
Just straight up literal observation.

We drive and usually go cold if we notice someone waiting to grab or set a target.

I like 300 a lot. 200 is what is easiest to get to around here. Don't know if your range allows but when shooting that far out I set up at least a dozen targets.

If it's my carbines I'm usually anywhere from 50-100 yards. My AR pistol is usually 25-50 yards. I really don't have any of my ARs set up for long range, that's what my bolt guns are for.

What ever range the critter happens to show up.

We had a gong set up at 300 yards at my gun club in Tennessee that I shot at when I lived there. I liked shooting it and then waiting until you heard the 'ping' at what seemed like a half a second later.

For a sub-MOA .223, prairie dogs are easy-peasy at 300 yards.

Due to substantial similarity in performance, I'm including 6x45mm.

When punching paper, I'm usually at 100 yards. Works for me. It's fun enough.

But, beyond that, I like to go 300+ yards. The last time I had the 6x45mm out, my brother and I were walking each other into a gong that we thought was at 650 yards (that's what we were told), but turned out to be just shy of 1,000 yards (990-ish -- we measured after we realized that there was no way it was at 650).
Lots of fun launching little bullets through the wind, over that distance, and having to walk in to the target because things were not as they seemed....

To date the farthest I've shot my AR (16") was 455 yards. 18" gong in fading sun with 20 mph side gust, non magnified acss retical red dot. Hold for half between 400 and 500 yards, a dot over for wind. Bang. Clang. Probably 75% hit probability. Thats with my xm193 copy reloads. Had i been able to see the plate better my hit ratio should have gone up.

So, yeah, 200-300 you should be able to swing no problem, cause Im willing to bet your a better shot than me!

I shoot at several ranges for different reasons. I have different rifles with different setups and optics.

25yds for fast snap shooting.

100yds just to try for tiny groups.

200-400yds for fun.

And landing shots on a 10in steel plate at 600yds is a nice challenge, especially with wind.
