Primer pocket blow out

243 win, 87 gr V max, 34.2 gr Varget, Fed case, win primer. The case had about 6 reloads on it. I suffered a primer pocket failure today. A small pinhole rupture at the edge of the primer and primer pocket. Now I have a small pit on the rifle's boltface. Don't think it's a big deal though. Any way to see these primer pocket defects before they happen?

No, just toss the box of primers (100).

Jim, either you or someone else made a similar statement in my recent thread. How would someone go about disposing of primers safely "deactivate" them?

Every fc brass I ever tried to load had a loose primer pocket after the very first firing.

I don't waste my time with it anymore.

"I suffered a primer pocket failure today. A small pinhole rupture at the edge of the primer "

That's a defective primer, it has nothing to do with the primer pocket, and there is no way to see if a primer that will fail that way.

+ 1 for the pic request. What brand/type primers and case brand might help shed light on the issue.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but it was the case that ruptured not the primer. I already tossed the failed case.

I don't know of a way to tell when something like this is going to happen and I've never had this happen. I think the biggest reason I've not had it happen to me is that I don't reload rifle cases more than 5 times. I use cheap brass, Winchester and Reminton, and since I'm paying less for them I expect less from them.

Federal is noted for soft brass, the first rule of thumb if the primer seats in the primer pocket easily it's time to recycle them. If I pick up a Federal case and am absolutely convinced it's a once fired case I will load it twice and discard, no exceptions. Brass is cheap compaired to replacing a bolt, I know of one fellow who glued his primers in place and ruined a bolt face.. I have been lead to believe that Federal brass is drawn (5) times, Winchester and Remington is drawn 6 times, that produces cases that are a little harder. William

I'd toss the whole batch of brass. Also, I was betting they were Federal before i opened the thread.
