Generally speaking, I agree with avoiding smallish cheap tools.

Spend $2 & the take down pin headache is gone for ever.
To put the front take down spring & detent in easily use one of these 1/4" clevis pins. You slide in the clevis pin into the take down pin hole. Line up one of the holes in the clevis pin with the detent hole, slip in the spring & detent, using a flat end nail, push the detent into the receiver hole, then rotate the clevis pin to capture the detent & spring. Now while keeping the holes in the clevis pin vertical slowly push in the take down pin putting pressure towards the rear of the receiver. The clevis pin will slide out & the take down pin will go in the hole trapping the detent in, then rotate the take down pin until the detent locks into the slot in the take down pin.
