"Ported" 45 acp

I have been offered to buy a:
Springfield Armory
Ultra compact with a 3 1/2 inch > "PORTED" barrel.
I've never used a "Ported Barrel" before

I like to use 200 grain lead SWCs in my 45 acp.
Usually siting on top of 4.1 of Clays

Do I have to do something different for a "Ported" barrel?
Do they like "lead".
Will I have to adjust my load?

What cha think?

My personal attitude about a pistol of that sort is that it's for carry, or bedside protection. It ain't for casual plinking or extensive target practice. I'd shoot such an animal from time to time to maintain familiarity, but that's about it...

Answers: I don't see any reason why; doesn't make much nevermind; I don't see any reason why.

There might be a bit more "grunge" buildup in the ports with lead bullets, but it's easily cleaned out and not worth worrying about.

If it's a lighter pistol than what you now play with, you might lighten the load a bit if the recoil bothers you. Outside of that, darlin', don't change a thing for me.

Don't know for sure if this is the same, but I had a V-10 Springfield in 45 ACP (ported, small frame). If you shoot at dusk it makes a way cool fireworks show (flame shoots maybe a foot into the air).
I'm thinking that if you were in a self-defense situation, even if you missed they'd be blinded by the light and maybe get their eyebrows burned.
I would NEVER shoot this without hearing protection unless my life was in danger, and it was a trade-off for never hearing again. Recoil was no problem (actually for such a light gun recoil was very nominal) but there's some muzzle blast if that bothers you. Have fun.

Went out and borrowed a: short barreled > "ported" > .45 >> to try.

Your caution was well founded. > Fireworks!

Not for me.

You saved me from making a costly mistake.

I had one of the Springfield v10's I traded it on a berretta
after 1 year of shooting. It was useless as a range gun due to the fierce unpleasant muzzle blast and pyrotechnic flash
It was incredibly loud, and it was heavy and NO GOOD AT ALL for carry, due to the PORTS.

When I traded it the idiot at the gunstore who was carrying one in his holster commented That he did not car if it set his eyebrows on fire cause the badguy would be blown away, I didnt ask what would happen if the goblin had two friends.

I bought mine used and traded it for what I paid.

The .45 is best from a full size gun.

Master Blaster, how did the ports affect the carrying? Snag on the draw, or what?

My pet carry gun is a Lightweight Commander, and I've not shot any of the "minis".

Art the problem is when you have to actually fire the thing.

My fear is that I would be temporarily, blinded by the flash and the hot gasses and particles that would fly up in my face from the ports if I had to fire the gun from the retention or close retention positions.
Since most civilian gun fights take place from about 5-10feet this is a real problem.

The gun might be just fine without the ports.

Carry wise I found the gun to be just as heavy as a full size 1911, but I had the SS champion frame on my v-10.
The v-10 balances poorly in an IWB holster (grip heavy)
my full size 1911's balance better in the holster and in my hand.

If you expect the porting to work you'll need gas velocity. Recommend Alliant Power Pistol (already gonna be flashy LOL).

About 20 years ago, when "Race Guns" hadn't really gotten going in IPSC, several of us played around with various types of ported barrels. I think I still have a gizzie which is built onto the barrel bushing. Natcherly, ya gotta see what kind of night-time lightshow the dang thing makes.

Bummer. But, I'd kinda forgotten until this discussion.

One DOES appreciate a ported barrel on a Raging Bull--which is not exactly a bedside-table gun.
