Reminton 870
I have a Remington 870.
When I store it, the action is locked in place, therefore the hammer is cocked. I'm wondering if it is bad to keep the gun this way. (bad for the hammer spring or something?) I dont LIKE to have it loose. I'm just wondering if there are any opinions on this. I've had it for a few years, still works like it's brand new! |

Well i have a 500, and i keep the hammer cocked. Hasn't been a problem so far . The 870 is a tough shotgun, i wouldn't worry about something small like that.

I've owned my oldest 870 for 49 years this week. It's been kept cocked most of the time.
Works fine. |

dont worry about this, or by having any magazine, shotgun or not, left fully loaded. a quality spring weakens with CYCLING between its normal range, not from being held at one point in its working range. have no fear. there are stories of guns left for 50+ years fully loaded and cocked. and then shot w/o problem.

Hello,
I personally don't leave my 870's cocked, I drop the hammer on a dummy round. That said, I would rather see you leave the scattergun cocked than to constantly drop the hammer on an empty chamber. I will be just fine. Good Luck & Be Safe

I always drop the hammer on my shotguns - take the pressure off the springs ( and sometimes I do it on an empty chamber ...) sorry Bob / but using a Snap Cap just takes a minute.

Great, thanx everyone
Looks like I'll just leave it cocked and locked. I love my 870. I just bought a Saiga 12. Man is it a great shotgun. But I'll probably get more use out of my 870. |
