Ithaca outside hammer
Got an ithaca outside hammer receiver from a friend, who was won it in an auction, but couldn't figure out what to do with it.
Has a set of barrels, that don't go with this gun. No stock or forend, but the receiver and internals are complete minus hammers. The screws are all messed up. Serial numbers are from 1893, if I read the chart right. I'm hoping to build a functional double with it, maybe in 38-55 or similar old cowboy round. Hell, maybe 45 colt. Main problem is fitting the barrels. Unlike most SxS shotguns I've done the conversion on, that have the bar under the watertable, this one has a weird concave piece of steel. Getting the bottom part of the monoblock is going to be super tricky. Will upload pictures later, but I'm considering milling this part out, as I can't see what function it provides, then putting in a cross bar like other SxSs. |

I've built on similar actions before, and I don't recall them ever having this part. Honestly, it's kinda confusing me why it's there.

Hammers can be hand made and hardened. I'd use 4140.

I'm not too worried about the hammers, last time I used some sand cast blanks, and they cleaned up really nice. No idea what they're made from, but I suspect they're quite a bit softer than 4140. Case hardened them, which should be enough.

I've only casted brass but never steel. You're a few steps ahead of me.

Oh, I didn't mean that I personally cast them. That takes a lot more effort than I'm interested in.
I bought them for 7 dollars a piece, lol. I think it was from something like Dixie gun parts Then just drilled the holes, filed square, filed, sanded, and blued. |
